If you savor listening to Staind, Default, 3 Doors Down and Nickelback, then this album is for you. Post-grunge rock. The lead singer sounds like Chad Kroeger (Nickelback), and that’s my only gripe - lacking of originality. Each song on this album has a reasonably memorable hook, albeit not too catchy, but easy to singalong.

Worthy mentions - “Better Than Me”, “Nothin’ Good About Goodbye”, “Bliss”, “How Long”, “Homecoming Queen”. Overall 7/10.

“Lips of an Angel”, is a ballad that grew on me faster than my five o’clock shadow. I know, I’m ageing. LOL. This song is about a broken up couple who have never moved on from their relationship although both of them have someone in their lives right now. Pride - the ultimate ruination of a relationship.

Here’s a quick ratings of the albums that I’ve downloaded and listened to:

  1. Din i tell you THe Killers is a killer! But, THe Hot Fuss album was way better- too much hype about Sam’s Town unfortunately.
And..Keane’s Hopes and Fears album was better than Under The Iron Sea

  2. Hey, try something different- download these less commercial albums- The Flaming Lips- At War with the Mystics

  3. tihtahpah The Killer’s new album’s not bad at all. I haven’t heard of their first album though. I like Keane. And thanks, shall download The Flaming Lips album when I get the chance. :-)

  4. You’ve gotta have the HOT FUSS! i just gave away a copied cd to a fren last weekend. after i got the original cd at Borders.

  5. Lionel Ritchie got a 2/10? Hmmm…. now where’s my vinyl copy of “Can’t Slow Down”?

  6. Wait a minute… John Mayer’s album gets a 1/10 rating?? I’ve heard only several of his songs, and I was considering buying his albums leh…. That bad meh?

  7. Wombat Yup, it’s really bad. Ho-hum stuff, barring “Outta My Head”.

Joash Well, it depends on taste I’d say, and I disliked the album because it was too dense. And I got bored too easily. :-/

  8. The Killers are alright. All-American Rejects are a bunch whiners IMO, so are My Chemical Romance and Good Charlotte. I can only remember that one Keane song (we all know which one), thought it was alright, but never bothered listening to their other pieces. Love Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol.

Seriously, try out indie bands if you’re really into this stuff. NEVER trust MTV in terms of good music. Only thing MTV’s good for is seeing Justin Timberlake crying like a baby getting Punk’d, watching hot girls with jiggly assets and enjoying Xzibit pimping hoes cars.

There are so many good bands out there and they never make it coz their music is not “commercialized” enough by the industry’s standard. Kings of Leon are one of the best bands in the world IMO, but how many out there have heard of them, let alone listen to their music. Look what happened to Chris Martin after he got commercialized. The music lost it zit.

Try listening to Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, Rehab, Kings of Leon, etc. My friend just sent me two songs from this band called Gregory and the Hawk and they were amazing as well.

Even if you prefer commercialized music over indie ones, then choose good bands which are obviously old bands. I worry that the future generation is going to think that My Chemical Romance is the epitome of true rock and roll when bands like Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath have existed in the past. Even the Scissor Sisters rock!

Don’t get me wrong, whatever I’ve said is just my opinion. It’s not like I’ve travelled the world and listened to every piece of music out there before deducting all that. Even I’m trying hard to get a hold of good indie music. Good luck and Godspeed.

  9. And yea tihtahpah, The Flaming Lips pwns :D

  10. gannu Thanks for the insight my friend. I’m not really into indie bands - and there’s an obvious reason why they’re indies in the first place. :-D I’m more into bands like Breaking Benjamin and to an extent, Hinder these days - post-grunge rock. Anything else doesn’t deserve to be call ROCK music. Having said that, I do enjoy All-American Rejects’ It Ends Tonight & Move Along, though they, The Killers and Keane aren’t memorable enough to be remembered in the coming months. Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars is just gimpy.

I don’t rate Pink Floyd but I’m fine with Black Sabbath when Ronnie James Dio fronted the band (DIO ROCKS!) And Coldplay is too boring, more fun watching grass grow. Scissor Sisters? Hahahahahaha! You funny! :-D Just downloaded Disturbed’s remake of Genesis’ Land of Confusion which I think does justice to its original, unlike fag-bands like Westlife.

Shall give The Flaming Lips a try since it’s coming from tihtahpah. ;-)

And thanks for dropping by dude, though I disagree with your opinion, I respect them. Unless if you’re a Liverpoo supporter…LOL

  11. Ah, am not a Liverpool fan dude. I’m more of a Houston Rockets supporter if you know what I mean :P Anyhoo, I will not dispute any of your opinions for the same reason as yours, except for when you said Sabbath rocked only when Dio fronted it. Sabbath kicked ass both in the Ozzy and Dio era, my friend.

And yea, Scissor Sisters rock. Music, my friend, music. Adios ;)

  12. Sorry, I just had to come back. When you said only post-grunge rock can be considered rock, what the hell were u thinking man?? There’s a reason why they’re called post-grunge. Coz they’re post it, past it!

This may seem clichè, but the whole point of rock and roll is to rebel against The Man. Which part of bands like Breaking Benjamin and Nickelback and Alter Bridge is rebelling against The Man?

The reason indie bands are indie bands is ‘coz not enough emo kids and pony-tailed little girls worship them. The complexity of the music is just too much for them to be able to play on their acoustics, thus making them turn to simpler riffs by Breaking Benjamin and whatnot. ‘Nuff said brother :)

No flame wars yah, just a friendly banter :D All in all, I respect all kinds of music ‘coz music is music after all. Cheers.

  13. gannu As long as you’re not a Liverpoo fan, I totally respect your opinion. LOL! But, Ozzy’s voice is bloody irritating. What’s wrong with you? :-)

Well, I hope the Man you’re talking about is Eddie Vedder and not the overrated Kurt Cobain. That fella only became famous when he died. Nirvana’s crap. Pearl Jam rocks!

And no way Indie bands are complex, they just think they are. ;-) Any more opinions? Man I love friendly banter… :-D

  14. noooo!! john mayer’s contiuum’s good. i like muse’s new album

  15. Alex Sorry matey…Mayer’s new album ain’t my cup of tea, though I think he has a spine-chilling voice and I kinda liked his first album. :-) Muse is not too bad.

  16. ya’know I ain’t a John Mayer fan but everyone has their own likes and dislikes. “Too dense”? Eh ape review ni? His current songs have more depth than Diddy’s Danity Kane’s group or something.

  17. mrs jeff buckley You’re right, too dense could be an understatement. LOL. Who the hell is Danity Kane? Sounds like a cockamamy wrestling tagteam or something… :-P

  18. yo guys…i think irregardless what genre of rock the bands are…good music is good music…Pink Floyd was great, and even the Spanish Los Lonely Boy album was great. They made it big with the song Heaven, but my fave song in the album was Nobody Else…And Keane is a special band because they’re a piano rock band. They were pretty much unheard until Somewhere Only We Know… And Zero7 was pretty much unheard until their song (In THe Waiting Line) was featured in Sex & The City. They were commercialized but they’re music is great (Try the album- The Simple Things- caution, this is slow lounge chillout music) As much as we hate commercialization…how can we not love Franz Ferdinand…or Red Hot Chilli Pepper or The Jet (the Get Born album). It’s all about the good vibes and good fun.

  19. And WE HATE John Mayer, James Blunt, Justin Timberlake. I regard them as the Sissies who think they can sing.
Bring back real great falsettos like Freddie Mercury and Aaron Neville man.
And excuse my ignorance but who is The Man? to me The Man was Bob Dylan- his songs been re-sung by so many. and the man writes his own music. How many artists can say that nowadays? J Lo thinks she can write- look what she came up with ( I’m Real)-yucks.
Danity Kane is one of those Cassie, Pussycat Dolls spinoff (seriously think this P. Diddy likes to pimp ‘em all)…
I blame it on Spice Girls…since then, there’s no stopping the eruption of girlbands…but hey, people buy into those kinda nice-to-watch-sexy kittens-and-who-cares-they-can’t-sing shit.

  20. tihtahpah I’m not a Pink Floyd fan. I like Keane. Haven’t heard of Zero 7, slow lounge? I’ll skip. LOL. Franz Ferdinand is cool. RHCP is okay. To say that I hate James Blunt is a understatement, somebody should remove his voicebox! :-D Amen to Freddie Mercury and the legendary Aaron Neville! Amen to Bob Dylan too! ;-)

  21. Dude, looks like my John Mayer comment has caused a snowball… Hahaha… yea, I don’t like James Blunt too. Anyone know Switchfoot?

  22. Joash LOL. Tell me about it. :-) I’ve heard of Switchfoot’s “Dare You To Move”. Is the band any good? Hopefully not an indie band like what Gannu lectured about. Haha!

  23. Errrm, ok. Nobody’s getting the whole point of The Man. Tell you what, go here and find out who The Man really is. The Man isn’t Vedder or Cobain. The Man isn’t Dylan or Mr. Bulsara. In fact, The Man is the opposite of all those people. That is why I said rock and roll was created to fight against The Man. Stick it up to The Man.

Anyhow, I’m always with the belief that good music is good music, regardless of who sings them. Heck, I love Search’s Fantasia Bulan Madu ‘coz I think the arrangement is wonderful and Amy’s voice does great justice to the song, but many may not agree. To me, that’s good music besides others.

Bands like The Who, Pink Floyd, Queen and The Beatles undeniably rocked the world, but there are so many other good artistes out there who are just not getting enough recognition. That is my whole point.

Gallivanter, you said indie bands only think they are complex? I’m not talking about their feelings and emotions and whatnot. I’m talking about the riffs. To me, the reason some post-grunge bands get commercialized is because their music is easy. That’s just my 2 cents though.

Plus, it’s not whether Ozzy sounds irritating or whether Dio sounds heavenly (or hellish), it’s what their music represents. A gateway to express your oppression and fight against the system which has corrupted mostly every single human being on Earth. Which part of All-American Rejects is rock and roll when they have joined the whole system in which they’re supposed to be fighting against? a.k.a MTV.

It’s one thing to be working for The Man on the inside and work your way up to only bring Him down, but it’s another thing to think you’re working against The Man, but all you’re doing till the day that you die is receive the money The Man gives you and die as rich bastards.

Right here I’m not talking about what music is good music. I’m talking about what those genres represent. When you wake up in the morning and look outside the window and NOT see the birds chirping and the blue skies floating, but see the old man on the street being mugged or your car’s tyres flat, only then would you be able to appreciate true rock and roll. Excuse me if you think I’m being cheesy :) Cheers and rock on \m/\m/

  24. gannu Alrighty dude, thanks…you da man! :-D

  25. Gannu: I think i know where you’re getting at. Frankly, I dont like All American Rejects, Nickelback, Alter Bridge…to me those are just boybands ACTING as rockbands. ZERO PERSONALITY. The music- ZERO PERSONALITY. Sick of hearing the same old shit about LOVE this LOVE that or DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS. For an appreciation of RocknRoll i think Almost Famous is a good example. Quote: “Look under your bed.( Refering to a suitcase of records- The Who, Bob Dylan etc) It’ll SET YOU FREE)”. That’s what really good rock n roll is about. Not about singing sappy songs about love.

  26. tihtahpah: Yeap, Almost Famous is a GREAT example. It most definitely sets you free :)

Let me quote yet another famous line:

“We are not groupies. This is Penny Lane, man. Show some respect. Groupies sleep with rock stars ’cause they wanna be near someone famous. We’re here because of the music. We are Band Aids.”

  27. so..gannu….u wanna join the music club gallivanter is setting up? ;) care to educate us?

  28. gannu & tihtahpah Well, whatever it is, I like American Reject’s It Ends Tonight and Move Along. I kinda think Nickelback’s okay too. And, Almost Famous was a seriously boring film. :-P

  29. OMG, Almost Famous was *&$(*@&#-ing good dei. Billy Crudup is one of those overlooked actors who’s really good. EH, you can’t be doing music review if you hate ALMOST FAMOUS..hahahah…cmon man, the bit where they sang TINY DANCER-ELTON JOHN…and the movie’s all about ROCKNROLL….that kid as THE ENEMY…awwwww..i can’t believe u dont like it.
    ALL AMERICAN REJECTS sucks.

  30. tihtahpah Well, actually, I can’t remember the storyline, so I guess it didn’t have the same impact on me. I didn’t say American Reject rocks, I only said that I like their 2 songs. And that’s my honest opinion. :-)

  31. Switchfoot… I don’t really know the definition of an indie band. Tell you what, I’ll send you several of their songs, then you can decide for yourself. But it is likely that you won’t like them, considering the fact that I like John Mayer’s music & you don’t….

  32. i told u we should open a club to exchange music ;)

  33. Joash Thanks for the tunes. I like “Happy is a Yuppie Word”. John Mayer was okay with “Bigger Than My Body”. I don’t have anything against him though. I like my music more buzzing these days, cue Breaking Benjamin and Hinder. :-)

tihtahpah Definitely. Let me think over it this weekend on the histrionics so I don’t get caught with my pants down running an illegal mp3 site. :-D

  34. tihtahpah: Heck, I’m up for anything even remotely related to music, dude. So yea, I’m all up for the idea of the music club, but when I read Gallivanter writing that Almost Famous was a boring film, I felt my blood boiling and the 7 Demons inside of me shouting in rage! Nah, I’m just kidding :P Anyhoo, if indeed Gallivanter’s gonna set up a music club, we gotta have our section where old school rock and roll is appreciated then. What say you, Mr. Daniel?

Gallivanter: Squeeze your brain juice dry throughout this weekend, dude. Let us you know of your music club idea :D We’re all up for it, but like I wrote earlier, we gotta have a section where old school rock and roll is appreciated, hehe.

  35. don’t suppose i can interest you in the new Meat Loaf album? Bat out of Hell 3: The Monster is Loose, the third installment of the great Bat out of Hell trilogy - a truly legendary album, i tell you!

    rock opera rules!

  36. if you enjoy pink floyd, queen, dream theatre and my chemical romance (i.e. the black parade), you’ll love meat loaf.

the album is produced by desmond child, the same dude that did some of bon jovi, man!

  37. gannu Definitely. On the lookout for a bulletin board system.

philters Meat Loaf should be good, which reminds me, I’ll need to download it soon. I’m not a fan of Pink Floyd and Chemical Romance, but love Queen and to a certain extent, Dream Theater. Desmond Child? Of course I know who he is! :-D

  38. philters : My copy of Bat Out Of Hell-3 is now on its way from Amazon.com USA. Should be here in 2 weeks time.

Initial reviews are not bad but will never attain the heights of BOOH-1 and BOOH-2. Not surprising since Jim Steinmann is not doing the whole album at all but contributed some old stuff.

Too bad Meat Loaf said there will not be a BOOH-4. But then, he once said no more BOOH-3 too.

  39. play the album loud, my brothers. you want to get that hit of high when the first track comes on:D
