It was 2 weeks before Deepavali, a hindu celebration (festival of light). The year - 1995. I was anything but a rempit for a couple of months - plying down Federal Highway (Shah Alam to PJ).

I remember buying an expensive helmet a few days before and used it on for the first time. Being the ignorant person that I was back then, thinking that Malaysians are noble beings, I locked my spanking new metallic-dark-red helmet to my “kapcai” 90cc Honda bike. I just finished my evening class @ Stamford College PJ and went over to my motorcycle to head back to Shah Alam.

Well, surprise surprise, the helmet made a disappearance ala Samy Vellu’s hair (his real hair I mean). I was disappointed and rang home for assistance. I had 2 helmets at home - a banged up helmet (the inner sponges are gone) that looks like it was used during the Japanese invasion of Malaya, and a newish half face helmet (which was a trend back then but I despised it!), and specifically asked for the half-face helmet as the banged up helmet made me look like a member of Party Tiga Bintang. My step-dad arrived an hour later with *JENG JENG JENG*, the Party Tiga Bintang helmet. Right.

So off I went, after I waited for the rain shower to stop, though it was drizzling a little. I was “speeding” at 70km on the motorcycle lane. I could’ve sworn I noticed a couple of snails passing me by, giving the “L” sign to me. Well, I was happy with my snuffleoffagus speed.

Upon reaching the Guinness factory (opposite Motorola), I saw the bikes were slowing down to exit the bike lane to head into Sunway, so I slowed down too. Within a few seconds I heard a loud screech behind me, and next thing I know, I was flying through the air like a human cannonball. I landed hard on a sandy area and my motorcycle went the opposite direction from me.

I woke up, turned around to look at what had hit me, it was a green-colored 125cc / 150cc motorcycle. That’s all I remembered, I was in a daze. I went over to my motorcycle, had someone help to pick it up for me, and rode back home (my motorcycle was in bad shape but it was still okay). I was in a state of shock, and my body was numb. Only when I reached the flyover at Shah Alam, heading into Section 10 where I lived back then, the pain became unbearable.

Headed straight into the front porch and called my mom. She came out and had the shock of her life. I was drenched in blood. The skin on my back (top right side) has been ripped off, my right hand had bad bruises in various parts along with other many minor bruises.

I checked into a clinic, and only then the doctor told me that she could see my bone (when she examined my left SHIN), and said it required it to be stitched. 3 stitches at a place where there is NO flesh. Now that was painful - I remember biting a towel.

I was on medical leave for 2 weeks, and subsequently developed phobias for motorcycles. No matter how safe you think you are, you cannot control external factors. I’ve been driving since then.

  5. damn…thats some story.i had my first big accident a few years ago on the eve of my SPM exams..a bike came crashin into my mum’s car that i was driving with high speed and the dude flew like superman past me.i was shaking like crazy after that…and the police interogation later on didnt help at all :S

  6. thank god! because you’re still here to tell the story.

we must be careful when driving and riding. i always set my mind that everyone out there is a reckless driver. so, drive very careful when at junction, roundabout, traffic and when drive out from my home. once i drive at out into the round about and a SHORT LADY DRIVER with her old modified large exzose toyota 1980 banged the front left side of the car from the bottom. she never admit that she was at the wrong lane and blamed me as the main cause. then there are this fella, helping and defense her because SHE IS GIRL!! DAMMIT!

so, because i just got my license and yes still under probation, i just forget about it.

  8. happened to me twice - once on foot and anor while driving. God said I still have things to do for him, so i’m typing this for u to read.

on foot - car whacked and i was so sure that i didnt see one when crossing the road. i was near the kerb and it somehow the side of the car touched me and i was flung on the floor, sliding short distance, hit left leg on kerb. all in 1 piece, just deep bruises. nothing serious.

while driving - on federal highway in front of bgn mcoba, just after kuen cheng, below a pedestrian bridge. braked as front 2 cars did so. next thing, sreeching sound and my car was hit at backside. got down ………….. wow!!!!!!! 7 cars behind stucked to each other. mine was just a dent on backside.

  9. pucklepickle I suppose the numbness made me look hardy. Yeah, I was in SCPJ until we moved over to 223. And yes, back then, I had hair. NCC4/95 :-)

    yo Ouch indeed. :-P

Kavilan I’m paranoid of riding motorcycles. Tried in back in 1998 (not by choice), from Old Klang Road to Subang Jaya. I was so freaked out.

JuN jUn XVII Of course, I’ve been driving for 12 years now. :-)

mat kolej Hope it turned out alright for ya.

jefferi Yeah, we must adopt DEFENSIVE driving these days, always anticipate the drivers around you to screw up. Looks like gender bias with your case. Hmmm…

papajoneh I think most of us with motorcycle experience have one time or the other been in an accident.

Johnny Ong Yikes, even on foot is not safe! Did that driver stop to help you?

  10. Yeah, driving is always safer.

  13. Sorry to hear about your accident.. but did you say in front oF Guiness? I had a terrible accident at the EXACT SAME SPOT sometime in 2000 (at about 1am).. which actually had me thinking ‘wow..so this is how it’s going to end’. No shit, bro. Luckily, I escaped unscathed (even though my car did a total 360 spin and was wrecked).

    [Reply]

  14. Izad Yeah, in front of Guinness factory. You did a 360? Well, as long as you’re alive my friend that’s what matters… :-)
