Black Eyed Peas Concert Review @ Genting Arena of Stars

Off the Richter! It was energetic. I used to like the Black Eyed Peas, but now, I’m a huge convert. Loads of catchy songs since 2003, and I’m excited to see what they do next. Fergie embarked on a successful solo career. Will.I.Am followed suit. However, I feel they’re more devastating as a group.

We were pumped up right from the start, and it was a concert with a bit of everything. The last time I was at the Arena of Stars was when Boney M came to town back in 2001. We only arrived at Genting approx 8:30pm, just in time to see the start, and what a start it was - “Hey Mama”!

All 4 of them were brimming with vigor that impacted portions of the Malaysian crowd. Still, there were idiots who favored sitting down. Mongoloids like them should’ve stayed at home to watch Fugly Betty instead. “My Humps”, followed by my favorite BEP song of the moment - “Bebot”, “Don’t Lie”, “Shut Up”, “Gone Going” were next on the playlist.

The band took a breather while Will.I.Am took centre stage with “I Got It From Your Mama”, followed by Fergie, who I’ve never rated highly, swept me off my feet with a flawless execution of “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, a mediocre “Glamorous” & “Fergalicious” and a catchy “London Bridge”.

The band then regrouped for “Don’t Phunk With My Heart”, the crowd-stomping “Pump It”, their breakthrough hit, “Where is the Love” and the infectious “Let’s Get it Started”. There were a handful of other songs too. A 2-hour blockbuster of sizzling proportions.

The Black Eyed Peas also added a bit of variety to their concert. Fergie did a glorious cover of GNR’s “Sweet Child O Mine” (1 minute snippet), and BEP combined for the encore performing House of Pain’s “Jump Around”. It was astounding. Never have I been so electrified after a concert, apart from Bon Jovi in 1995 and MJ in 1996. This is now, officially, my THIRD favorite concert. It has kicked MUSE down to 4th. 8/10 on the Gallivanter scale.

  9. Hi There,

Couldn’t help but leave a comment.

I have to agree on the ’sitting’ down part. I was right in from among the standing crowd and saw Taboo complaining to their manager on how how upset he was with the organisers carrying a signboard that read ‘No Standing’. That’s when they pumped it up with Jump around, man it was fantastic.

Often when I attend concerts, the artist never sing or perform as to their album/video. But the BEP were fantastic, every note was the same!

I had brilliant fun, I understand how it must have felt up there with people sitting and only clapping as if it was some orchestra concert!!!

Thank god, I was among the standing crowd pumping to the music!!!

  10. Ratu Syura It was a great concert, hopefully they return again.

Nadia Jane I was standing though it felt awkward but everyone around me was sitting. But I didn’t give a damn, this is a freaking concert for crying out loud! At the MJ concert in 96 and Bon Jovi in 95, I always had the rela idiots asking me to sit. Could be a ruling from the Malaysian government - how lame.

  20. just stumbled on the comments on the BEP concert.wasn’t it just absolutely mind-blowing?!!

as for the subject of sitters, i was one of those seated near the front. in my defence though, wheni got up to dance (and was a bit conspicuous as i was the only one on my row standing), a policeman came to tell me to sit down. that was embarrassing because it wasn’t as if i was trying to bash down the barriers and accost them on stage anything! i mean, it was just me!

but the moment they started “Pump It”, i just thought, well, why don’t you just go ahead & arrest me! out of the corner of my eye, that poor policeman was about to make his way to me but a member of the genting told him to chill. talk about not being able to use your discretion in a situation!

  21. ariane I know exactly what you went through as I suffered similar ordeals during Bon Jovi and MJ. But I “encouraged” people around me to stand so the RELA folks are outnumbered. :-P

  22. Hi man!

Me too I just had to leave a comment. BEP is now one of my favourite groups for its diversity and pure attitude songs (some are silly of coz haha!)

And yeah I wuz there too and the concert totally rocked!!! I was at the standing area and boy me and my gf went crazy jumping around like monkeys!!! it was our 1st concert together too. ahhh…sweet! actually the price diff wasn’t that much and being at the front was definitely worth it.

I’ve some pics at http://www.flickr.com/furrywooky do check it out.

Wish i could have gone to Bon Jovi’s concert (i wuz too young to go! =(
MJ’s concert i only got a view from the ticket gates at Merdeka Stadium!! haha!…sad la..

Once again nice report. totally sums up the awesome event. BEP rulez..’nuff said.
