My company organized our first quarter event of the year, a Karaoke competition, at Redbox The Curve last Friday. There were 2 main events – a group competition and solo competition. I did not want to take part in the solo competition, but somehow I got duped into it.

Our group name was The Flaming Sinatras, and we had 3 rounds of voting. The first round revolved around ROCK music, and we got it rocked with “It’s My Life”. It was partially the reason why I suggested “Sinatra” as part of the group name. “Frankie said I did it my way!”. Since I knew this song by heart, I took the helm to lead the team.

We made the semi-finals, this time, we belted out “Beauty & The Beast” and this time, since I never liked this song and the pitch was too high/low for me, I sang in the background. The ladies were flawless and took the team to the final.

The final, what I thought would be a golden chance for us to win the title, were shocked by the our fellow media team, who went with “Back For Good”, and their harmonies were the key factor that our team lost by a single point. We sang Atlantic Starr’s “Always”.
So, a one-two finish by my department. Then, the solo competition got under way. It was supposed to be 7 people but the numbers swelled to 11. My turn came up third, after a kickass rendition of “Summer of 69″ by my fellow amigo, Sofi, as the opener. Ruves followed it with a nice rendition of “When I Fall in Love”. And then it was my turn.

I opted for Manbai’s Kau Ilhamku. The crowd (some 40 of us) were great in cheering me on. In fact, they were great in cheering everyone on. It was sensational.

I made it to the final 3, pitted against Sofi’s “Summer of 69″ and Will’s “Hero – Enrique Iglesias”. Will finished second runner-up. It was down to me and Sofi – the contest was decided by 3 judges, a Malaysian, a German and a Dutch-Japanese. To my surprise, I emerged the winner of TSA Idol 2008.

LOL. I am now really looking forward to performing a duet with Sofian on the acoustic guitar at the company dinner in at the end of this year. I can hardly wait!
