Mass Hysteria at Sekolah Menengah Sultan Salahuddin in 1990

Yes. I’ve experienced first hand. It was one evening during class, I think it was Art’s class, the last subject before the end of session. Our class were “floating”, in the sense that we do not have any permanent room, but float around to an empty room available elsewhere. Kelas Terapung 1A8.
After being a prefect in my previous school, a primary school called Jalan Kuantan 2 in Titiwangsa, I joined this school (after moving from Gombak to Shah Alam) for Form 1 – the school with the longest name – Sekolah Menengah Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in Section 2 Shah Alam.
Somehow, I was elected as the class monitor. And I was one of those selamba class monitor, I used to bully my assistant monitor, who in time, became one of my closest friends from school. I remember one teacher, questioning how I became class monitor. LOL. I’ve no idea myself. But it was fun.
That evening, a school bus carrying our school girls came back from some outing, the bus stopped in front of our class (bilik kemahiran hidup), and within seconds, girls were running left right and centre. Everywhere – SCREAMING. Our subject teacher locked the door, and all of us peeped through the window, without making a sound.
The girls were stronger than the teachers, who were trying to go around to stop them. Even 2 men failed to stop a girl, and she was only 13/14! I remember my classmate at that time, Shakri, who zipped out to “help”, only later to come back and boast on how he “got into the action” by fondling their undeveloped chests. When life gives you lemons, go squeeze them. LOL.
This did not stop, easily 50 girls running amok. Then it came, the bell. It marked the end of the session. Our subject teacher, who was afraid to leave the room, then turn to ask me to retrieve the room key from the teacher’s room, some 30 metres away on the first floor.
With 40 pair of eyes on me, I reluctantly agreed. It was the fastest 30m run I made as a 13 year old. I would’ve put Usain Bolt to shame. LOL. I ran as though my life depended on it, scared of being face to face with a hysterical girl or girls. Somehow, I managed to come back with the key, and almost 7pm, when it was calmed, most of us scurried out the school compound, to wait for our school buses.
Of all the days, our school bus shows up late, having problems with the engine. It stopped, we alighted the bus, and the engine died! Every single one of us panicked!
[ad#ad1]
The next day, our school made the newspaper, histeria in Section 2 Shah Alam. Apparently, I found out later that a couple of girls were camping in the school the night before, and went to some tree behind where my floating class was and God knows what she did or said. That girl caught hysteria too.
Apparently, hysteria is a recognized medical condition, but to have 50 girls experiencing it at the same time, I wondered. Also, why it only affects Malay girls is beyond me too. There were a number of non-Malays and they were OK. Strange. Is there a logical explanation to this?

dood, I have those hysteria encounters at school long time ago. I mean it’s pretty common at schools. I don’t know why. I heard stories of it almost everywhere. I mean during the time. I was er 13 btw, at my school, mind you, I stayed at the hostel with my 2 sis. And I’m the only one for afternoon school session. I was pretty much alone at the girls dorm. Sick rite? Anyways, er to make the story short, one day, some of the girls from my dorm sort of er went “amok”. That includes my eldest sis. Well they said, if people who experiencing hysteria, we shouldn’t look at them or have any eye encounter, I have no idea dood, it’s just so. I think there were around er 4-5 people who’s into that “amok” mode. And I think there’s some sort of connection between those people. I also dunno how it started.
That’s not it, once we had this girl. I think she lost her mind, ran around nekkid in the field @_@”"” we were so scared that we lock ourselves in our classrooms till the matter resolves @_@”" pretty weird shite ei?

Gee, that sounded like a scene from some Stephen King movie or something … LOL!
But yeah, I’ve also noticed that mass hysteria only happens to Malay girls. I’ve no explanation for it myself.

Oh wow…mass hysteria. Now that’s something I haven’t heard in a while. Though I have to agree with massy – that it’s pretty common in schools, especially with Malay girls.

Imagine you were studying late in your hostel and suddenly you heard a girl laughing and screaming, and your other mates were already sleeping. Walah! i’ve experienced it before and God knows how scared I was that time.

Hmmm, it only happened to Malay girls? Weird isn’t it? I think it is because only Malays believe in bomoh2, hantu setan, buatan orang etc hehe. I’m a Malay myself, so before any Malay (if there’s any) wants to bash me about this, I KNOW what I’m talking about, ok? Hahahaha!
And because of the Malay girls believed too much in it, it caught up with them emotionally, causing emotional distress that could lead to hysteria. See, if you don’t care what you did behind the big old tree, you wouldn’t think about it to the point of stressing yourself, right?
It happened in my boarding school as well. It was crazy, it did scared the shite out of me though… you could hear the hysterical sceams from one hostel block to another, macam domino effect. It started when someone mentioned ada orang minyak berkeliaran few days before. So the emotional stress were pretty pent up before the hysterical break, HAHAHAHA!

Oh to Xin, I also don’t eat pork mah, but I am not easily possesed also… how come? Unless being possessed by alcohol lah, then I’ve to admit I’m easily possesed by it, by dancing and laughing tak henti, hahahahahah!

massy – “Pretty common” sounds scary. Yeah, I’ve no idea myself how hysteria can catch on, in my case, 50 girls almost simultaneously.
Nick Phillips – Ya man, Stephen King would’ve been proud. Wonder why it only happens to Malay girls though. That is strange to say the least.
kaDusMama – Yeah, I’ve seen them overpowering the adults. My first and last experience (thank God).
sriyany – But why only Malay girls though?
xin – LOL. No la, I don’t take pork and you don’t see me running amok either. Oh, wait a minute, I got something hanging between my legs. Nevermind.
|1f34|-|1r3 – That sounds like an excellent making of a movie. I’m sure between you and I, we can direct something decent, definitely better than the Malaysian “ghost” movies, that always seem to end up as a dream.
juliet – That does sound scary. You sure they’re not high on substance ka? Hehehehe!
Leona – Suicide? Hmmm, they must’ve found out that NKOTB will never come to Malaysia for a concert!
Faiez – You could be right, hit the nail on the spot. Still, it doesn’t really explain the strength they possess. Hmmm… I agree, it’s nothing to do with pork or otherwise, I’ve never been possessed either, oh, wait a minute, I just remembered that I have something dangling between me legs. Doh!

Kuantan seems to be an interesting place, first it has probably the world’s worst ever husband, then also the world’s most haunted school (hysteria EVERY DAY since May, even in the middle of morning assembly, I think even until today), SMK Tanjung Lumpur:

I’ve heard of hysteria but never seen one in real life. It’s a very strange phenomenon, and happens only to females and usually Malays. How is it spread from one person to another like a virus? Very strange indeed, I guess it’s one of those unexplained things…

ooh…scary indeed. I’ve never had those experience myself during my school times. But when I was working with one of the local artiste’s event management company, I saw one of the singer having such hysteria and she had a blank look in her eyes, like in a trance of something. Gave me real goosebumps!!!
I’m not sure why this kind of stuff affect only Malay girls and come to think of it, yeah, I’ve never heard about hysteria in a Chinese School or a Tamil School. BTW, why does it only affect girls? No stories about boys? *scratches head*

|1f34|-|1r3 – Wow, that could be where most film directors go to to get inspired. We too can get the same inspiration from our Malaysian parliament.
ben – Well, I’ve been to Kuantan and have some OK memories there. But yeah, I heard of Tanjung Lumpur.
foongpc – Correcto. Unexplained.
calvin – Hmmm, hence Faiez’s comment may ring true, perhaps Malay girls believe in the devil too much that their minds start to wander.
marsha – Yes, I was a prefect in primary school standard 5 & 6 and class monitor in form 1. Until I my evil plans to take over the world got busted.
blusher – Ya man, they’re in trance. Nope, no boys have been affected, perhaps a handful, but that too, could’ve been Malays.

who says histeria only attacks malay girls? I have a rare experience here. I remembered when i was f5 in my hostel, guys and girls also afffected by hysteria, though. quite similar like in your case, it was a massive hysteria which involved like 50 boys and girls scholars.boy who were affected didn’t screaming like the girls did.they laid obliviously with eyes openned wide. At one time, me and my 8 other colleagues carried an affected junior to a sick bay. It was so damn heavy that we couldnt ever imagined. some who witnessed us from long distances, claimed that they saw a hairy-elemental,some kind of banshee sitting on the boy’s body.untill now, I still couldnt find an answer why guys also risk of being affected by hysteria. Yeah, if you talk about a scary film, I’m waiting an eerie ones like the 80’s the shining.I’m sick of back glancing hantu raya and all the saka stuffs..

It is weird kind of situation but it is common in certain places. Many may not believe if spiritual healers and exorcists associated the phenomena with bad spirits (jinns) rather than normal mental health problems. We find difficult to accept when it affected 50 persons.

Surprisingly, these kind of stuff happen in almost every school. Maybe not histeria, something else, like ghostly images or things we cannot explain. I went to St. Bernadette’s Convent, Batu Gajah and there are just too many ghost stories to tell. One famous story is a pontianak sitting on a three next to my classroom at night. And another involve the Japanese, you know the war and everything. They said, at night there are Japanese soldiers marching on the field and the badminton court. However, I went there for 9 years and encountered nothing supernatural.

Sarah – I think about ghostly or ghastly images, are down to the vivid imagination of school children who were exposed to horror stories and ghost flicks.

dude, if u talking about Malaysia I don’t know whether only Malay who can get hysteria or not. But I spent my high school time in Indonesia before.
My school is located in quite a rural area. After years the place is developing and there’s hospital in building beside my school which before just a empty creepy land. When the building just 10% complete, then suddenly there’s a lot of students, no matter girl or guy, Chinese or Malay, they hysteria. And it continuously for a month!
School committee decided to call the Priest from church to give some holy water in all classes in purpose ghost busting(LOL). At first it doesn’t affect but at least it getting better, we even called Monk and other dukun to do so until it ends completely.
Just a simple story from me, but it’s truth.
Have a nice day.

Bro, i accidently found your blog. what excitement you had experienced on that day. goodness. I know there was a malay girl in my class who SCREAM the very same day. I was in 1S1…or was it 1S2 or S3…forget it! age is catching up. I can’t remember exactly. Anyway, many in my class were puzzled. The rest of the episode – can’t recall. I am not denying all these hysteria cases – maybe there are spirits involved. I know for a fact when I was managing one of the parks in Putrajaya, one of my staff (guy) were possessed – not 1 but a few spirits including a little girl, woman, and snake-like spirit. I heard ‘classic’ malay song one night when I was ‘hunting’ for owls in the park. very nice voice….
by the way, your hysteria post is interesting. thanks for reminding….
