P1 Wimax Shah Alam Review

Let’s face it, most Malaysian hate Streamyx. Telekom Malaysia is a joke of an ISP. I’m glad that there is competition in this space. I left Streamyx for Macrolynx in the beginning of 2008. The service has been pretty decent, especially the customer services. They are quick to resolve the issues, not more than 24 hours, and they do not use the Streamyx excuse of blaming all your way!
However, Macrolynx has been experiencing a drop in its stability of late, so much so, when I regularly complained last November, they gave me an additional month worth RM88 for free. That still did not satisfy the bandwidth sucker in me.

In December 2008, I was gallivanting @ Sunway Pyramid like I always do, and saw the P1 W1max promotion. I don’t have to pay for anything for the first 15 days, just take the modem home and give it a go. The modem cost RM999, but until 31st December 2008, it was FREE!
I checked its coverage, and my condo, is apparently metres outside the coverage area! I was downhearted for a while, but the staff mentioned that I should give it a try anyway, though I may be outside the coverage area, I’m living in a highrise condo.
I took the modem back, plugged in (without all the rubbish setting up and account registration – it detects the user account from the modem itself!), and WALLA! I tested its speed, and it averages 1.6mbps. I signed up for the 1.2mbps for a year and I’m enjoying speeds ABOVE that! OLE!

The downfall is that since I’m just outside the coverage area, my connection drops at least once a day and it can take me up to 3 minutes to connect again. And that is where the problem lies, because I’m outside coverage area, calling P1 customer service for help may be useless since they may not be able to diagnose. Oh well.
The first bill was RM99 (1 month deposit), Registration RM100, Activation RM50, Stamp Duty RM10, and I was good to go. My Macrolynx account only expires in March, exactly a year of using its service, but, it does not matter anyway, as I’m now officially a P1 W1max convert.
Let’s hope in a year’s time, the speeds do not deteriorate when more users sign up. Yes, I’m selfish and I want it all to myself!
P1 W1max, if your area is covered, I recommend you to switch over immediately! If not, then let’s wait for Amax, Airzed or Redtone, the other 3 Wimax operators to launch so Streamyx can be made obsolete.

I do thought of that but it’s a little expensive for me seeing that I only surf in JB over the weekend.. Let us know more abt your experience with P1 later.

i’ve surveyed the service, and wen it comes to speed and reliability, P1 still has the upper hand. But its limitations on bandwidth is what really bothers me. I suck at least 10GB per week, and that certainly goes well above the permitted bandwidth. Streamyx will still have to do for me as I have to grit my teeth and wait for other unlimited bandwidth packages.

Sound like a good thing man… but what about Torrents and will P1 affect Torrents? So far i don’t have to worry about torrents being throttled by StupidX even though it’s slow.
Still do worry abit when it comes to being a Pirate. :p

I’m using Jaring Wireless Broadband and they’re pretty excellent I must say. Customer service is first class unlike Streamyx. It’s good that there’s more competition for streamyx. I agree with you, let them die a slow painful death!

I heard from my friends in Malaysia that using the pipe is definitely way off the price for what we paid here in SG, perhaps its because of the distance or such.

chrisau – Yeah, if you’re a regular at downloading, like I am, with songs, then it’s worth it. I’ll keep you posted.
Kavi – Well, I never go above the 20GB limit a month, because I never download movies/series, only songs. Even if you go above that, your bandwidth slows down for the remaining days of the month, that’s about it though.
xin – Yeah, Streamyx is rubbish, we all know that, they just been bullying us with their monopolistic product for so long. Their time is up.
Michael Yip – Nope, P1 allows torrent use, it’s in their FAQ. I use Bit Comet on a daily basis.
Nick Phillips – Yeah, fuck Streamyx.
pirut – I think there is one in Sabah, can’t remember which one though, check it out.
|1f34|-|1r3 – Because Shah Alam is the capital city of Selangor? LOL!
Borneo Falcon – Streamyx will not step up, they probably cut the price, and that’s about it. They’re fucked.
Kay Leaf – Nope, not yet I think, though I did read a press release few months ago, saying that Wimax will be available in December. Not sure though.
wel – Fibre Optic in Penang? It’s about time, as Penangites are sometimes too blind to admit that their island is overrated.
Harmony – How much do you pay in SG?

Oh thank God I read this. I myself was debating on the P1 vs Streamyx thingy. Cause I was all set to get p1, then my friend comes and says that since P1 doesn’t use land line (it depends on satellite or smth), it isn’t that reliable. He asked me to upgrade my Streamyx to the RM 100+ one per month, and it’ll be better.
Bleh… I don’t know. You’re making me think otherwise.
Gallivanter
Jan 25th, 2009
amresh – Dude, it’s better you do more research. Don’t trust streamyx, it’s still crap no matter what. I did my upgrade too when I used streamyx, and guess what, the crap that comes with it is upgraded too! I don’t know what planet your friend is on, but Wimax works. He’s probably an affiliate of streamyx. LOL.

hai all.. i’m new in here.. i’m in telco industries. For streamyx, TM is upgrading thier backbone and also their ADSL system so after this all subscribers can browse smoothly. But the only thing that can cause a problem when using streamyx at home is the quality of the copper wires as it effect the link quality to your house. If you live in new developed area, then its ok (because of new wires).
For P1, currently no problem on browsing as users are not as many as streamyx users (the link are not crowded yet!). Wait until there are so many users, then u’ll know it performance. If it still can serve u at subscribed rate, then we can say it really good. P1 is coming to tmn desa real soon. Hopefully by mid year, more than 100 sites will be up in klang, shah alam, pj, kl.

fairul nizam – True on P1, but untrue on Streamyx because they are plain rubbish. The thing about P1, in a year’s time, if it becomes congested, there will be 3 other Wimax services to choose from. Why hang on to Streamyx when you can switch to P1 and enjoy it while it last? Besides, their customer service is WAY better than the fucked up Streamyx will ever be.

Hi, I’m new here. Was reading some of your posts until I came across this post. I also agree with you strongly that P1 wimax is really good, as least for now. I believe my blog post here is worth sharing with you. And yes to the customer service, it’s much better than streamyx too.

Hi,
I am trying out Wimax on a 15 days trial basis. My area is out of Wimax coverage. According to the technical team, if your home within the 300 meters zone from the boundary, then I should get the connection. I tried that, and it works. After trying for 5 days, the signal seldom disconnect. I have made up my mind to sign up with Wimax and say goodbye to streamyx.
The funny part during the installation is to find the right location to put the modem in order to get the signal. The manual advice us to place it near the window.

For P1 wimax,
If im not mistaken the cheapest is only RM45/month, isn’t it?
And with that u got 1mbps, that’s bargain.
But my area Kajang is not covered yet, guess I have to wait.
But I wanna know this, is the connection uses shared IP?
Gallivanter
May 26th, 2009
riz – I’m on the RM99 plan, and I enjoy 1.6mbps on average, but lately, it’s back to 1.1mbps thereabouts, still solid.
The connection does look like it uses a shared IP unless you get a more expensive package.

Sorry to comment on P1 Max now.
During the 1 week trial, everything was fine. Once I sign up the plan, 5 days after the trial period, the careline emailed me a notification of fair usage, telling me that I have far exceed my threshold and bandwidth conrol will be implemented, my download can hardly exceed 30 kB/s.
I am a p2p user and I like p2p online entertainment materials. Switching from 512K stremyx Wimax 1.2M package ($99) because most of the online entertaining programs requires higher bandwidth. I have checked with the careline personnel and confirmed that after the threshold achieved the bandwidth will reduced to 800kps. Now, what I get is 400kps which is lower then 512k streamyx.
my advice :
if you always tune to p2p programs, stay with streamyx
if you like to download heavily video/musical collection, stay with streamyx
Please clarify with p1 Max what will happen if your download exceed the threshold.

Peter – Yes, they do have a bandwidth threshold of 20GB per month, and after that, they do reduce your usage. But, I rather face that than the unreliable crap that Streamyx puts out.
Peter
Aug 31st, 2009
Galivanter,
What happen if the bandwidth reduce to 150kps after the threshold ? Paying extra $50( compared to $49 package) for downloading 15g of data at 1200kps and continue receiving data at 15kB/s. I still remember those days when I used 56k modem internet account, the download speed was 55/15 Kb/s for normal/peak hours.
I am retired, I prefer spending a few hours per day enjoying online or downloaded entertaining programs. I’ve heard people complaining about streamyx but inevitably streamyx had provided me tons of data for my happy hours.
I have complaint to p1 careline that they should provide me a reduced bandwidth of 400kps after I reached the threshold download limit, I have requested p1 max to allow me to terminate their service without binding by service plan I signed but receive no reply.
I signed up the service plan because p1 careline confirmed that the reduced bandwidth after threshold will be 800 kps. I am getting 400kps then 150kps, really sickening experience.

Thanks Peter for your feedback. I never had problems with my P1. The streaming capabilities is certainly way better than Streamyx. It’s been serving me well so far. Well, one man’s poison is another man’s food.

in the brouchere it says dat my threshold is 5gb..
is dat 5gb monthly or weekly…n if i exceed that 5gb..what happens next? do i have 2 be paying extra..?? sum1 pls reply..n hw 2 chek my threshold
Dante
Jan 10th, 2010
It’s a monthly threshold, eg 20gb for a month
No you don’t have to pay anything extra when you exceeded, your speed will drop fro promised speed eg 1.2mbps -> 800kbps
you can check by applying an account at the p1.com.my website with ur modem serial number.
