Nope, this is not a paid post nor with any hidden agenda like the Malaysian government. This is from my personal experience and what I believe is a set of decent softwares to have to safeguard your personal computers against the internet, so you don’t get caught with your pants down.
Don’t assume that you won’t need any softwares of this kind because one of these days, you will get a stick up your butt for not taking precautions, and ultimately, lose all your data.
Avira Anti-Virus It’s FREE for home users. From real-time monitoring to malware recognitions, it is a good software to have installed on your computer.
Avast Home Edition It has on-demand scans to protect e-mail, instant messengers, monitor network traffic, p2p protection and the whole gizmo.
AVG Antivirus Free Edition The hottest free protection software out there. It will not slow your system down (low system resource requirements) and has a Resident Shield that provides real-time protection as files are opened and programs are run.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware It removes the most advanced malware and spyware. With one of the fastest, most effective quick scans and malware removal capabilities on the market, this program is the perfect addition to your PC’s defenses.
Advanced SystemCare Free This is a comprehensive PC care utility that takes a one-click approach to help protect, repair, and optimize your computer from removing Spyware and Adware, Preventing Security Threats, Privacy Protection, Fixing Registry Errors, Temporary Files Cleanup, Startup Cleanup, Repairing Windows and Speeding up System.
Spybot – Search & Destroy It can detect and remove a multitude of adware files and modules from your computer. For advanced users, it allows you to fix Registry inconsistencies related to adware and to malicious program installations.
CCleaner A freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.
I have a few more that I used but I think the above should suffice to give you some form of protection from the garbages that the internet delivers. Do share with me if you’re using any other tools that are proven.

Personal experience about Malware…
Lavasoft’s AdAware and SpyBot-SD. Had a bad case of spyware and malware infections at one time; t’was sometime around 2007. ironically, adaware could clean some of em’, while spybot couldn’t… and vice versa… don’t know nowadays seeing I use my company’s licensed NOD32.

I’m using AVG and I’m satisfy with it…for the time being.
Avira is doing not bad too. Have tried it in the past and it is indeed good.

I say Avira is the best, as it heals, not like AVG that immediately terminate ur files…and, complete ur pc with the Rollback RX together with Avira antivirus, and you’ll never need to format your pc again. Ever.

naith_kk – Yeah, that’s why I use them all. I don’t use Lavasoft anymore.
tekkaus – I have all 3 anti-virus running on my computer at the same time!
ben – All.
Pinknpurplelizard – Yeah, cheers!
mecharojak – HijackThis is just to tell you what the problem is, and not the solution.
Amanda – Perhaps, but I’m using all 3 antivirus without problems at all.
daniel aka dEe – You’re welcome.
