4 Way of Temporarily Surviving Without a Job
[ad]
Do you have enough savings, that if you lose your job, you can survive for at least 2 months? Do not assume that your job is secure, and that you’re immune to the current economy downturn. Always be prepared for the worst, and by that, I don’t mean to go all gaga and start skimping of everything, that you live on bread and water on a daily basis. Unless if you can part the sea, I suggest don’t torture yourself.
RESUME
Importante – keep it updated at all times, so when the time comes, you have a working resume ready to be sent. Add some softer skills, and please, by that I don’t mean “I can do the shuffle”. Always ensure that you proof-read your resume, that’s very important, because spelling mistakes can easily get you not hired, especially if you main strength is apparently attention to detail.
FUND
Start saving. It’s as simple as that. I have just started in October, in case of dire need. Though the current motivation is more because of that holiday of mine next July for 2 weeks. Still, it is a start. Try to save enough moolah to last you for at least 2 months.
EXPENSE
Try to cut down on your monthly expenses, like monthly memberships to things you can do without. Keep that insurance premium going because that will save you when the time comes. I kept mine going, and my appendix surgery in mid 2007 was fully borne, else I would’ve forked out RM9000. Try to cut down, I’m sure there are areas that you can do just that.
INCOME STREAM
This would be helpful, starting a second stream of income, like blogging, or selling some of your stuff on the internet, taking up writing or part-time journalism. The best place to start is to find something that matches your hobbies. I have yet to find my second income stream, i.e. from doing music reviews. I do not see blogging as a means of commercialization, because I want to keep blogging as it is, an insight to my thoughts, and my likes and dislikes.

Yeah..True.. Thats all we have to do now..Hoping for a bright year next year…

Great tips, Gallivanter! Personally I try to have at least 6 months reserve just in case! Oh yes, insurance is extremely important although I think people should not use more than 10% of their income to pay for the premiums. And getting a second or third income stream will definitely help!
Btw, sorry I’ve to delete the post on my blog which you commented today. That post was not ready but I accidently posted it! Instead here’s my post for today – It’s called Dear Santa : )

I have enough savings to survive for 6 months. But the question is: Can I get a job in 12 months?
I have found that, the more specialized we are, the more difficult it is to get another job. Demand for burger flipper is high, I suppose…

Saving for raining days is important but just for 2 months is really not enough. If possible save a little more. You might not be able to find a job within 2 months.

Shally – 2009 will be a tough one as the market rallies.
|1f34|-|1r3 – Yeah, we take things for granted and don’t save. My mom always nags at me as I never ever saved moolah, now I know why she nags!
sheela – Yeah.
kaDusMama – I agree, I’ve already cut down on clubbing already, as I told myself that once I hit the big 3-0, I’ll cut down on clubbing and eventually quit it.
deana – Maybe open a bank account and try to set aside a some cash every month for a rainy day? I know it’s not easy but it takes a lot of discipline.
foongpc – 6 months is fantastic, now I know who to bother when I’m cash=strapped, you’re now my best friend!
philters – Agreed. EPF is not enough.
Khengsiong – You can get a job, it takes approximately 3 months (worst case) to get a job. If you’re choosy, then it gets harder.
philters – Oops! I transferred all the links over to my blogroll from the sidebar, one by one that I must’ve missed a few. Don’t la, I add you ok? We friend.
Lisa – Yeah, 9K for an appendectomy!
kristie – No prob!
molly – Touche.
xin – Great stuff!
Alv0808 – Yeah, an apartment is a MEGA commitment, especially all the small and hidden cost that comes with it!
desmond-t – Yeah, it’ll get worse before it gets better. But, you can get a job, it’s all about positive thinking!
still takde. *continues to merajuk*
