Taken from Bon Jovi’s explosive album, “Slippery When Wet”, one of the greatest rock albums of all time, this is a lesser known track off the album written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. They say third time’s the lucky charm and that perfectly sums Bon Jovi’s career that suddenly burst into a massive juggernaut that made them one of the biggest rock bands on planet earth.

An album written by Jon Bon Jovi, who roped in a number of musicians – Jeff Beck, Randy Jackson (of American Idol), Elton John, Aldo Nova, Little Richard which blazed the American charts through the movie Young Guns II. This song has the accompaniment of orchestral proportions and Jon clearly thrived in the delivery with his vocals at his best.

“Miracle” was Jon Bon Jovi’s second single after the magical “Blaze of Glory”, a really tough act to follow and predictably didn’t do as well as it only peaked at number 12 in the American Billboard charts. The music video features Matt Le Blanc of Friends and Matt also appears in Bon Jovi’s 2000 single “Say It Isn’t So”. I love the Blaze of Glory album, a possibly Jon singing at his peak, really high notes!

Bon Jovi wrote a few songs with the words “Arms” and “Open all Night”, and this is one of the unreleased tracks that didn’t make the cut of any of their albums, considering the melody and tempo, it would’ve have fit any of their albums and rightly so. But, thankfully, Bon Jovi released a collection of unreleased tracks in 2004, a 4 disc collection!

I love this tune. Pity it didn’t make the “Crush” album as Bon Jovi dropped it aside as it did not fit the theme of the album. I love the chorus and the bridge to the chorus. They originally planned for a new album called, “Sex Sells” in the late 90s, but opted for a new direction and released “Crush” instead.

I’m not sure which album was this song written for, but it doesn’t sound like it would’ve fit into any of the albums’ themes over the past decade. Hence why I think Bon Jovi kept it aside and released it as a collection of outtakes in 2004 as a 4-disc collection of songs that didn’t make the cut. It’s a pity because I think it’s a really good song.

This Bon Jovi track, a mid-tempo adult contemporary number, is from their “Crush” album back in 2000, the same album that gave the world, “It’s My Life”. Although it’s less commercially viable for the masses, it’s one of my favorite tracks off the album. My only irk is how Jon sings the word “train” at the end of the chorus.

This is an awesome version from Bon Jovi that Leonard Cohen surely would’ve been proud of. Jon, although his best vocal years are behind him thanks to aging, still has some fire left in him with this rendition. I remember hearing the original and was not swept off the floor by it, it’s one of those songs that can grow and grow on you, like a beanstalk.

While I think this is the weakest effort of the 4 songs, despite there are some parts of the song that I like for its originality, especially the intro which repeats itself as a hook throughout the song, which I think is a nice touch.
While the melody is pretty average for a band like Bon Jovi, the lyrics here is pure brilliant, lots of satire infused lines. Here are some of my favorite excerpts of the lyrics:

Yesterday keeps comin’ ’round, it’s just reality,
It’s the same damn song with a different melody.
If you hang in long enough they say you’re comin’ back
Just take a look, we’re living proof and baby that’s a fact
It’s the same old story but it’s told a different way
Here come the rockers, the dancers and the remixed drum machine
This one is for the CEOs and record companies

Nice touch by Bon Jovi, possibly a take of their efforts too, the more things change the more they stay the same is very apparent in the following songs – “It’s My Life” in 2000, “Have a Nice Day” in 2005 and “This is Love This is Life” in 2010 – all have similar chords. I’m not gonna blame them for sticking what they do best, Bon Jovi style.

Hot damn! Another rocker by Bon Jovi, staying true to their theme of making the best out of life. This is classic Bon Jovi and I’m glad this uplifting rock of a tune is added into their Greatest Hits which is coming out in early November. Bon Jovi knows what they do best and stick to their guns with a little current music to stay relevant. This is in the same veins of “It’s My Life”, “Have a Nice Day”, practically a continuation of their feel-good rock songs! AWESOME!

When I first heard the snippet on the Bon Jovi Facebook page, I didn’t really like this song, and I rated it as a poor filler. After listening to the full track, I now changed my mind. The lesson to be learn here is to never make assumptions, as assumptions are the mother of all screw-ups!

I think it’s a kickass song by Bon Jovi, with the commercialism of it toned down a little comparing to their previous singles. Despite the use of some technology, the rawness is amazing, and Jon seems to defy his age with the vocals.

I’m looking forward to their Greatest Hits and will share the remaining 2 new songs. Stay tuned!

Bon Jovi’s doing what they do best, writing songs about love and life and why deviate from that forte that has made them one of the biggest rock acts in the world, who easily fills stadiums 10 times over?

The Greatest Hits will include ”Livin’ On A Prayer,” “Always,” “It’s My Life,” “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Who Says You Can’t Go Home.” There are apparently 2 versions of the Greatest its, which is rather disappointing seeing that it’s an attempt by the music label to cash in.

This was my article that appeared in the February 2010 issue of Junk Magazine, an entertainment magazine that I have been contributing for over 8 months now. Taken from their latest album, this is Bon Jovi’s second single after “We Weren’t Born to Follow”, a song that I never really embraced as opposed to this one. I like the music video because it’s refreshing, but I couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed towards the end as it became a little cheesy. Although I can see why they did it, to deliver the message of the song across.

Bon Jovi - The Circle Album Review

In 2000, Bon Jovi started off the decade with a bang, as “It’s My Life” that pummeled them back into the spotlight. In 2002, they released a very electronically-dependent album in Bounce, which yielded “Misunderstood” and my favorites “Undivided” and “Bounce”, though I felt it lacked individuality.

In 2005, I thought “Have a Nice Day” was an awe-inspiring album, with a number of songs made it to my permanent playlist – “Bells of Freedom”, “Dirty Little Secret”, “I Am” and “Welcome to Wherever You Are”.

Bon Jovi - The Circle (Album Review)

In 2007, they took the country route, to my apprehensiveness, though the final result was praiseworthy. Lost Highway showcased superior tracks like “Any Other Day”, “Everybody’s Broken”, “Make a Memory”, “One Step Closer”, “Til We Aint’ Strangers Anymore”, “The Last Night”, “Walk Like a Man” and “Whole Lot of Leaving”.

The Circle is emphatically a very fresh Bon Jovi, a Bon Jovi reloaded so to speak. The 12 songs are very nouveau and not as commercial as their previous albums from the year 2000 on. “We Weren’t Born to Follow” however is NOT a testament to how great this album is. It feels like a compendium of epic soundtracks, the soundtrack of life that addresses reality through positivity.

We Weren’t Born to Follow 6/10 I shall not comment on it any further. Definitely a WRONG choice as a lead single. It’s OK, but it doesn’t have the staying power, like their 2002 single “Everyday”.

Bon Jovi - When We Were Beautiful - Album Review

When We We Beautiful 9/10 I just can’t get enough how EPIC this track is and it will sure as shooting heighten the atmospherics in concerts. The drums and the African-esque backup makes it a superb track. DOWNLOAD THE MP3 HERE

Work for the Working Man 8/10 I wasn’t sure of this track when I heard the snippet. The intro purposefully borrows “Livin On a Prayer”‘s bass-line to a certain extent. The lyrics are magnificent and very genuine.

Superman Tonight 8/10 This track is made to be a soundtrack. It has all the elements as a perfect song conclusion of a heroic movie. Like most of the songs on the album, it moves through various stages of intensity, slow to fast bursts. Excellent.

Bullet 6/10 The intro and guitar works is nothing short of kickass! Unfortunately, that’s where all the points were given. The song itself is not as enkindling, although it’s very un-Bon-Jovi-like, it is refreshing. I feel the lyrics to the chorus could’ve been better.

Thorn in My Side 5/10 I’m not a fan of this track, though I enjoy the progression of its verses. The whole assemble is very Avril Lavigne-like, pity that the noise that obliterates the delivery of the lyrics. Not a fan of the chorus either.

Live Before You Die 5/10 It’s a narrative track, reminiscent to the song “Joey” they wrote in their 2000 album “Crush”. It showcases Bon Jovi’s storytelling magnitude, which has been subdued over the years though more commercial productions. Points for the lyrical content.

Bon Jovi - The Circle (Album Review)

Brokenpromiseland 9/10 How awesome is this track! A refreshfully attention-getting storytelling, Bon Jovi at their best. It’s also consecrated with a very un-Bon-Jovi-like components of the vocal backups. The chorus knocks the track out of the ballpark!

Love’s the Only Rule 7/10 This one has the Bon Jovi forum fans raving about. Though I think it’s a smashing track, I don’t believe it’s the best on this album. It packs a big chorus though I felt the end of the chorus, lacks originality of sorts.

Fast Cars 4/10 Not one of my favorite I must say. It might grow on me, though I won’t bet my house on it. It’s one of those tracks that is pleasant to hear ONCE, because it’s new, but you’ll get bored of it before you know it.

Happy Now 6/10 They got the verses right but it feels strange listening to a band like Bon Jovi singing a song like this, a mismatch maybe? I like the lyrics on it because it is a satirical outcry - “Can I be happy now?”.

Learn to Love 9/10
The verses may not be as compelling, but damn, the chorus is exquisite. They absolutely nailed it, a sobering look at positivism, which ends thunderingly, “You’ve gotta learn to love the world you’re living in”. What a brilliant ending choice of the album!

VERDICT: 8/10 There are some EPIC tunes here, arguably their best in a long time!
