I cannot remember how long has it been since I wrote a personal entry. Between music, movies and life, I kinda neglected that side of my blog, though I did it on purpose.

I started exercising at the end of 2010 towards a fitter me and managed to lose 6kg by May before pushing my fitness up a few notches when I conquered Mount K in June. I even played futsal the following day after climbing down from the mountain – yes, I was that fit!

Then, it all went downhill after that, I started to focus less on cardio and more on muscle from July to October, but only worked out once a week or so. Who was I kidding? Myself of course. Come November, I weighed 72kg.

All hell broke lose in December when I went on a Christmas binge – gobbling up pineapple tarts, chocolates, ice cream, cendol, fruit cakes, Christmas cookies, savories and boozing as well, the craziest binge I have ever done in my life – and just like that, I gained 3 kg in the month of December itself! WTFOMG OH NO YABBA DABBA DOINK!

I then realized that I need a reason for me to get fit, like the Mount Kinabalu climb. 6 days into January, and I’ve been to the gym 3 times – a sort of accomplishment considering the lack of exercise in the final 6 months of 2011.

Yes, you can also say that I’m panicking! I don’t want to look like those typical old men with beer belly protruding so badly that they haven’t seen their penises for years now, or probably it died of being choked by the fat of their stomach. How on earth can it get a hardon with all the fat just above it? No, I’m not gonna torture my penis like that. Oops, sidetracked! Haha!

Knowing that there’s always a chance of me slacking off, I made a plan of conquering the toughest part of the Great Wall of China later this year, Jinshanling. I have 9 months to get fit again and hopefully this time, no Christmas binge repeat in 2012!

Bring on Great Wall of China and a fitter me!

It’s just like yesterday when I receive the news that my old man died, after I returned home from school, age 8 going on 9. My mom was only a housewife when dad left us, me and my younger brother who was 6 going on 7.

I must admit it was a difficult period for us, for the first few years of trying to get life back on track. But, in the end, we did it. My mom became a pillar of strength for my brother and I and we did fine on our own, outcast by both sides of the family, my dad’s side stayed away from us as my mom was from another cast, not higher nor lower, but different.

My mom’s side didn’t help either as they were too reluctant of the union because of cast. What nonsense. Sad but true. Fast forward some 15 years later, my mom’s side managed to patch things up together, but not on my dad’s side.

I saved some cash and re-did dad’s grave a few years ago and recently made one small renovation at the his grave. I still miss my old man dearly and never fail to break down whenever I witness an emotional moment between a dad and his child, be it on real life or TV.

Always be grateful for your parents although you may have your frictions or not see eye to eye. They are doing it for love so make sure you constantly remind them of your love whenever you can. Park the ego outside.

I miss my dad. Understatement.

I always wondered if my goatee hair goes all white, how will I look and will I keep it? My wife tells me that I look like a small girl when I clean shave, perhaps something for me to fall back on when I hit 50? Haha!

I do have a couple of white hair around the goatee, probably 10 to 15 – while some are out of the goatee range line, some are in, and it’s where I have to resort to scissors to remove them. Sometimes I think hairless men are lucky not to be bothered by such conundrum, but then again, can hairless men be construed as men in the first place?

Where has the time gone? It’s funny how when we’re in our teens, we can’t wait to hit 21 years old, then enjoy 20s to the best that we can, embrace turning 30 then try to hit on the brakes! Unfortunately life doesn’t work that way – you either embrace it or try to fight a losing battle.

I might clean shave when I age as I think having a white hair goatee will look ridiculous and probably be more apt on a goat.

I also have 2 white hair on my chest, but that’s a story for another day!

Yes, it’s a long overdue post and it’s been a while since I talked about personal matters. We returned to Sabah on 3rd June for 11 days after a year hiatus. Our last trip was in May 2010, a memorable one where we got married at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

I purchased our flight tickets in March and the thought of climbing Mount Kinabalu never crossed my mind, until middle of April where I saw some photos on Facebook. Without hesitation, I contacted my brother-in-law much to the downplay of my Sabahan contacts on Twitter, saying I need at least 6 months in advance. I gambled. And we got the dates we wanted, 6th June 2011.

This was the most fun-filled outing to Sabah yet, especially spending time with Mel’s family and we managed to squeeze 2 meetings with some of our best Sabahan compadres, the first one was a D’Junction and then the final one was at The Loft.

I didn’t have much gears prepared but I know it was good enough for the climb. All you need is a good hiking shoe (trust me – get Bata’s Weinbrenner shoes RM80 – excellent), not the ones we encountered a bunch of kiasu Singaporeans with gadgets slipping all over their expensive Salomon shoes!

Skullcap, head light, thick gloves, one thick jacket, 2 pairs of socks, raincoat, few bars of Chocolate or snack, walking stick (a must!) and you’re good to go! We paid RM650 for the both of us, excluding mountain guide at RM85, and you can get him to carry your bag, which we were charged at RM8 per kg, which was worth it.

It took us 4 hours and 19 minutes from Timpohon to Laban Rata and it rained all the way up, was wet and you could see giant worms and giant leeches coming out during the rain. Google it! We arrived at Laban Rata, and all I remember was wanting a beer, until I saw the prize of it being RM25 per can, I chose Shandy at RM15 instead! Haha!

There is NO water heater at Laban Rata, and you’re in a room of a group of people, we were in a group of 6 single beds. It was extremely cold at first but when you sleep at around 8pm you won’t feel the chill. We got up at 2am and started our ascend to Low’s Peak at 2:45am, the last to depart.

We overtook quite a lot of eager tourists (a good few did not make it – altitude sickness!), before reaching Low’s Peak in time for the sunrise. It was AMAZING to say the least! Even on the way up there were so many stars in the sky, really beautiful! We went up at a snail’s pace, took lots of photos up at Low’s Peak before descending down. Total time of 5 hours and 50 minutes of ascend, photography and descend back to Laban Rata.

We rested for an hour before taking 3 hours and 50 minutes descending. We were quite fast until the last 3km, where it rained again, this time, very heavily! I didn’t mind because it was fresh, but it hurt our feet (imagine waterclogged shoes and your toes rubbing against it every time you descent a step!).

We were lucky that it didn’t rain at Low’s Peak, as our mountain guide said, not all who go up get to see clear view, it depends on your luck!

We then got our color certs (RM10 each) before following Mel’s family to Sandakan for a few days. I was so content and proud of my fitness level, as it’s the fittest I’ve been in 19 years and shedding 7 kilograms in the last 6 months was worth the effort. I’m not stopping.

A tip for all of you when climbing the mountain, take your own time, your own pace, because if you try to move fast or be a wise guy, you will suffer when you ascend to Low’s Peak, as I’ve seen quite a few “fast guns” who did not make it!

I now proclaim myself a Sabahan, one I married a Sabahan, and two I conquered Mount Kinabalu. Another step closer for me is to learn to play the bungkau!

And that was the basis of my thinking as I grew my Facebook friends. Last week, after researching on my traffic, I realized something that I should’ve realized a long time ago, that having more friends on Facebook does not equate to more traffic, and my website’s Facebook page is good enough to channel traffic.

So, it was a no-brainer, like everyone else, I made a mistake in my assumption, and spent the next few days deleting “friends”, from over 1400+ to 700+ now (50% reduction!), and I believe I can even trim it down by another 200 or so. I think I have or know at least 500 contacts.

My blog is no longer a blog hence I hardly write about everything else except new song reviews. Blogging has been dead for 2 years now and with micro-blogging platforms like Twitter, there’s no way blogging will make a comeback.

Hence the change of my blog layout to a magazine-style concept. I still get traffic, 80% from Google search, which translates to more income via adsense. I have also stopped visiting blogs for a year now, only have less than 5 blogs bookmarked via Google Reader. That’s about it.

I think deleting friends off Facebook is a healthy exercise and a liberating one, and it’s about time I did that. How about you?

However, if I have accidentally removed you and we have shared conversations in the past, I apologize in advance and do let me know so I shall re-instate our friendship.

Yes, that I did! The perks of being attached to City Golf at Bangsar Shopping Centre, I can to meet with sports celebrities. I remember in my first month, I had a good chat with Shebby Singh and Steve McMahon, plus the crew of ESPN when they organized a press conference at City Golf.

Fast forward to March 12th, last week, we played host to some of the ex-footballers of the English Premier League. There were a number of them but only 3 stood out for me – Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Michael Thomas. While the first 2 were Liverpool players (and no I don’t support Liverpool), they were brilliant for their club during their heyday.

Robbie Fowler & Steve McManaman at City Golf

Michael Thomas may not be a household name, but he is the reason why I supported Arsenal and I got to tell him that in person. No, it was not because he was fantastic, but he scored the crucial second goal in a match where Arsenal needed to win 2-0 at Liverpool on the final match of the day, and did! Those days, you’re either a Liverpool or Everton supporter, and I hated both and wanted a team of my own, although my relatives house were clearly divided between the 2!

I told myself that I will support the next football team that breaks the Liverpool – Everton domination and Arsenal came calling. Pity Steve McMahon wasn’t there as I’m sure Michael Thomas would’ve taken the mickey…again!

I managed to get my brother to join as well, and he was starstruck meeting Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and to a certain extent, Phil Babb, whose testicles remain legendary amongst football purists.

Michael Thomas of Arsenal/Liverpool

Please ignore my gay pose of holding the digital camera bag. I blame it on the lack of meat (Lent) and the reason why I supported Arsenal. I shall leave you with that famous Phil Babb nutcracker against Chelsea years ago. Hang on to your testicles and enjoy!

I finally get to tick one of my dreams as reality. It was by luck that one of my readers left a comment on in our of my myriad new music reviews about using the track for an online radio. I got a little curious and asked for more details.

I found out that there was an opening with an online radio station called DJ Korn (www.djkorn.org). I was skeptical at first, as my first impression of the name and the site is that it’s more geared to the underground metal scene. I would be so out of place.

Turns out, I actually made a mistake in judging a book by its cover too quickly. I gave it a go last Sunday for a couple of hours and I absolutely loved it! I have now managed to secure a permanent slot, every Sunday from 5pm to 7pm.

So, not only I will continue to share new music, I am also now spinning music online. So catch me, DJ Gallivanter on Sundays from 5pm to 7pm online, via www.djkorn.org. Expect a mixture of EVERYTHING.

This blog has evolved into a music website as I always wanted it to, despite some misses along the way like having 2 websites.

Let’s face it, blogging is truly dead and buried, that’s why I opted a magazine theme that has worked well with traffic returning to the heights that I previously enjoyed before Facebook exploded.

There will be no new post from 29th January to 6th February 2011 as I’m taking my wife on a honeymoon. It’s only to a neighboring country for a week in Koh Samui, which I’ve visited in 2005, attending a full moon party that kicked ass! Having been to all 3 islands, I rate Koh Samui as the number on destination, followed by Krabi, and if no choice, Phuket.

I would like to take this rare opportunity to wish a very Happy Chinese New Year to all. Thank you for supporting me all these years. OK, I’m off to finally take a hike at this place below.

Until then, let me leave you with one of my favorite less commercial Bon Jovi songs, which made our top list of songs for our wedding montage.

I was trying to recall but somehow could not grasp the timeline. I remember going to school for the first time in 1984 when my late dad sent me. But that can’t be the earlier childhood memory, can it?

I also have spurts of other memories but because I’m unsure of the timeline it occurred, I can’t be too sure. It amazes me how some people claim they remember what happened to them when they were as young as 2 years old. It surely must’ve been very significant for anyone to remember that early, no?

OK, I just remembered plucking small mangoes in my home lawn and I think I was 5 years or so, and also behind the house, collecting new small tiles (1.5cmx1.5cm) for some reason that escapes me now. Haha!

What is Your Earliest Childhood Memory?

I had a lot more memories after I started primary school, mainly moving from one school to another as we followed my late dad on his job ventures – Gombak, Parit Buntar, Seberang Jaya, Taman Ayer Molek Penang to the final place before he died – renting a room near Tawakal Hospital, just above Yusof Haslam’s restaurant.

OK, I’ve deviated from the topic with the last paragraph. Haha! Anyway, do share what’s your earliest memory as a child.

I’m now in my 11th year of working. My first official job began on 2nd January 2000 and ended in October 2007, almost 8 years later. It was a sportsbook and casino company, where I started out as a Operations Officer and left almost 8 years later as a Web Content Manager, with a team of over 20 staff, running my own department.

I thought I would never leave, not because I didn’t want to or was afraid of change, but there wasn’t any good opportunities out there for me. I almost did in 2005 joining the Berjaya Group, but I rejected it at the 11th hour as something just didn’t feel right with my instinct. They closed down after a couple of years.

I'm Leaving My Job For a New Challenge

Then I found this sports marketing rights agency based in PJ, and with my love for sports, it was a match made in heaven for me when I joined in December 2007. I took the job offer, starting out as New Media Acquisitions Manager and leaving as Senior Manager of Media. It was a 3-year love affair that led me to liaising to clients like Real Madrid, MotoGP, French Ligue and other major rightsholders.

Fast forward to September 2010, I was headhunted and had 2 job offers on the table, both General Manager positions and thought about it carefully for over a week. While one was a safer route with a media company who wants to build their new media business, I went for the more challenging route with a golf-related company as it offered many possibilities for me to grow further as part of my education before venturing out with my real estate ambitions in a few years’ time.

Come 15th November 2010, I will commence as the General Manager of City Golf.

It is only natural that you develop some form of rivalry with your siblings. It’s because of the instinct to win over the hearts of the parents to be the star in the family. I have no problems with my younger brother who is in fact doing much better than me and I’ll always be proud of him no matter what.

The reason for my post is about my step-siblings, whom I just found out have been talking about my brother and I to the fact that they must do all they can to outdo us in any form of way. So much so that both step siblings have resorted to some form of immoral tactics in search for money.

I find it rather amusing that the both of them were treated very well as children in terms of money and all things that money can buy. My brother and I used to be a envious at them, because every week when they returned from their mother’s home with lots of physical materials. I suppose it’s their mother’s way of trying to redeem herself for not loving them enough.

My brother and I used to fight a lot when we were younger because we both felt some form of differential treatment, although it was only based on our own assumptions. As we both became adults, we realized that there’s no major conflict in the first place, just petty arguments that made us lose years between us.

While our brotherly relationship feels a little artificial at times, it’s a good maturing progress for both of us. We are after all, brothers.

I just can’t help to feel sorry for my other 2 step-siblings, who view us as rivals, and have surprisingly mentioned that to my mom that they simply cannot see my brother and I doing better than them. It’s a pity that they have to resort to dirty tactics to try to get ahead of us. Dirty here I mean business bribes and using fake credit cards.

I hope though, in time, despite that they are already in their adult years, they learn to act like one because their childish acts will only lead to problems down the road. The sooner they realize that, perhaps, the sooner they just might be happy.

I know, I rarely post about my personal life, but here’s when the rare happens. Let’s rewind time back to late 2005 and the day I decided to make 2 major changes of my life – going bald and working out plus a minor change in the form of blogging for the first time.

I joined Fitness First in the same month, then at Clark Hatch and exercised for almost a year – burning the fat and lifting weights. I was loving the new me and the self-confidence that came with it.

As I have this habit to ceaselessly challenge myself, this was when my over-enthusiasm got my shoulder injured. I had a rare lapse of concentration and it cost me my left shoulder. I pushed the weight in front of me, and I was was drawing it back, somehow I dropped the strength intensity and the machine pushed the weights back to my shoulder level with my left hand pulled back in the process. I heard a snap of sorts and it was harrowing!

I stopped working out for 3 months after consulting a specialist and having a couple of injections to alleviate the pain. I still carry that lingering irritation until today. This was what made me stop working out all those years ago.

So here I am again 4 years later, August 2010, in an endeavor to shed some fat which is at 17.4% now and be fit once again. My goal is simple – to look decent in time for Christmas and to be in great shape when I return to Kota Kinabalu next year for Kaamatan festival for a week’s holiday.

Celebrity Fitness Subang Parade is now my home 3 days a week. I continued my routine years ago of doing cardio first lifting weights later. I’ve been running for 30 minutes with an aim to improve my distance. My endurance grew at each work out, clocking 2.5km, then 2.8km, 3km, 3.1km, 3.3km, 3.5km and recently 3.6km within 30 minutes. Marrying a fitness junkie was the best thing that has ever happened to me! I got a great package deal and my wife got my package in the form of my fat in return. Not sure how I pulled that one off! Eat your heart out David Blaine!

Guess who's meditating in this cave - April 2007

I’m glad she’s my workout partner, else I would probably end up in the hospital by now with my heart in my hands trying to hit 5km under 30 minutes after a few weeks. What’s my goal you ask? Well, to be able to run 5km in under 30 minutes by November 2010. Unfortunately, my calves do not recover as fast as before in time for the next workout so I’ve been shifting to other machines like cycling and the stepper.

Lifting smaller weights has been so tough on my physical self as well as ego, especially in constant view of other dudes with biceps the size of Singapore strutting their wares. But, I always end up feeling good because most of these guys wear those very tight and small singlets – an extremely high indication of their homosexual orientation. Haha! Of course I won’t tell it to their face, I don’t have a death wish and I like my ass!

I don’t intend to die by the age of 36, the same age my dad died 24 years ago and I’m 4 years away from it. I hell-bent on maintaining a balanced lifestyle to keep me on this earth for the next 4 decades at least!

The Gallivanter's Exercise Regime

Here’s my advice:

YOU have the power to control your life and to decide on your future. So stop thinking that life sucks and the world is unfair, you need to help yourself to maintain your health. It’s no bed of roses so expect hard work in the beginning until it becomes a routine. There is no shortcut in life. Start exercising at least twice a week.

If any of you frequent Celebrity Fitness at Subang Parade on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays after 6:30pm onwards, come look for a bald guy who’s consistently out of breath being trained by a hot bod lady who just happens to be his wife.

It took me 3 months to find the right software as there were many out there that was crap, and it took me another week to learn the ins and outs of the software. So, if any of you need help in creating a photo montage for your wedding, just contact me. Of course, I’m not a charity foundation so there will be a minor fee depending on the number of photos, the length of the song and how many montages required.

Here are 3 photo montages that I prepared for my wedding on 22nd May 2010. The first one is a photo montage of Mel my wife, the second is a photo montage of yours truly, and the third is a montage of us together, days leading up to our big day.

Mel’s Single Photo Montage: Beyonce – Halo
My Single Photo Montage: Bon Jovi – Love’s the Only Rule
Our Couple Photo Montage: Bon Jovi – Learn to Love

But first, here’s our welcome clip for all guests.

I finally got married on the 22nd May 2010 in Sabah, at Sacred Heart Cathedral to be exact, witnessed by close family members and friends. It was a whirlwind of joyous orgasms as the day flew by and before you know it, it was over. This is a 3-part series for KK – church, lunch at PKS and dinner at Beringgis.

I will also share the official photos taken during the KL event as well once I have it. Thanks Alvin Ting for a kickass job!

I remember it was my first year in high school, 13 years old, moved from KL to Shah Alam, where I had to part ways with a bunch of wonderful classmates of Jalan Kuantan primary school in KL, to the unknowns of Shah Alam, a school which name is arguably the longest in Malaysia – Sekolah Menengah Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah – and the prefects fine you RM0.10 whenever they do a spot-check to ask you to name the school.

German DFB Logo

It didn’t take long for me to make new friends; I also became the class monitor too. I remember in June, when the World Cup fever gripped everyone, and I was discussing it with my friend, who was an Argentina supporter, casually asking him who shall I support, given the lack of knowledge of the world of football. Naturally, he said Argentina, because they won the 1986 World Cup and had the best player in the world, Diego Maradona, who of course retired before the 1990 World Cup.

Although I did not watch the matches, I then followed Argentina’s progress, but was cut really short when they lost the opener to Cameroon 1-0. So, I decided not to support them, and waited for all the first round matches to complete, and I went with the team who scored the most in their opening match, West Germany. They thrashed Yugoslavia 4-1, so I kept my eye on them.

Germany

In the next rounds, they thrashed UAE 5-1, and quickly found a favorite in Lothar Matthaus as he notched up 3 goals in 2 matches. It is then when I decided to support West Germany. Fortune favored me as West Germany went on to win the World Cup against Argentina, 1-0, and Lothar Matthaus quickly became my favorite player of all time, I also started supporting the clubs he played – Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.

Since then, I’ve been an avid supporter of Germany and have not looked back since, win or lose.

How did you start supporting your football nation?
