Khaled Hosseini The Kite Runner
What a heartwarming book! It took me a few pages to get acclimatized with the book having heard so much about it whenever I google for new fictions. Reading has been one of my favorite pastimes. I started off really young, and regularly burglarize the minutes during bedtime to read. I usually get spirited away with the book until to the point of being ambushed by mom for not sleeping during a schooldays – got the cane treatment. LOL. But I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. So I hid under the blanket with a torchlight. That’s when I started wearing glasses too. If only I had listened to mom. Yikes!
Anyway, The Kite Runner tells the story of Amir who is ghosted by the guilt of betraying his childhood friend Hassan. The story is set against a background of turbulent events – fall of Afghanistan, Soviet invasion, refugees exodus to Pakistan and the US, and the infernal Taliban regime. It’s an epic tale of father and son, friendship and betrayal.
This 2003 book is Khaled’s first attempt at writing, and I loved it – extremely provoking. I may be 4 years too late, but better late than never. There will be a movie version of it released at the end of this year, with Persian dialogues instead of English. I can hardly wait.
I bought this book in 2005 because I’m always on the lookout for asian / historical based stories. At that time, nobody was talking about it yet (as of this week alone – I’ve read about it at many sites – I wonder why?!)
It’s a wonderful book – although there are many times I am tempted to stop because I don’t want to find out what happens next and times when tears just had to come out of my eyes because of the cruelty that took place. But the part about how life was in Afghanistan pre Taliban was very interesting. Two thumbs up for me too
Jewelle Well, I bought this book because I was couped up at home for 40 days and needed to kill time. I’ve been noticing this title for quite sometime so I thought I’d give it a read. NO REGRETS.
