P1 Wimax Shah Alam Review

Let’s face it, most Malaysian hate Streamyx. Telekom Malaysia is a joke of an ISP. I’m glad that there is competition in this space. I left Streamyx for Macrolynx in the beginning of 2008. The service has been pretty decent, especially the customer services. They are quick to resolve the issues, not more than 24 hours, and they do not use the Streamyx excuse of blaming all your way!

However, Macrolynx has been experiencing a drop in its stability of late, so much so, when I regularly complained last November, they gave me an additional month worth RM88 for free. That still did not satisfy the bandwidth sucker in me.

In December 2008, I was gallivanting @ Sunway Pyramid like I always do, and saw the P1 W1max promotion. I don’t have to pay for anything for the first 15 days, just take the modem home and give it a go. The modem cost RM999, but until 31st December 2008, it was FREE!

I checked its coverage, and my condo, is apparently metres outside the coverage area! I was downhearted for a while, but the staff mentioned that I should give it a try anyway, though I may be outside the coverage area, I’m living in a highrise condo.

I took the modem back, plugged in (without all the rubbish setting up and account registration – it detects the user account from the modem itself!), and WALLA! I tested its speed, and it averages 1.6mbps. I signed up for the 1.2mbps for a year and I’m enjoying speeds ABOVE that! OLE!

The downfall is that since I’m just outside the coverage area, my connection drops at least once a day and it can take me up to 3 minutes to connect again. And that is where the problem lies, because I’m outside coverage area, calling P1 customer service for help may be useless since they may not be able to diagnose. Oh well.

The first bill was RM99 (1 month deposit), Registration RM100, Activation RM50, Stamp Duty RM10, and I was good to go. My Macrolynx account only expires in March, exactly a year of using its service, but, it does not matter anyway, as I’m now officially a P1 W1max convert.

Let’s hope in a year’s time, the speeds do not deteriorate when more users sign up. Yes, I’m selfish and I want it all to myself!

P1 W1max, if your area is covered, I recommend you to switch over immediately! If not, then let’s wait for Amax, Airzed or Redtone, the other 3 Wimax operators to launch so Streamyx can be made obsolete.
