The Prestige & The Departed
I did it again. A weekend double. Back to back flicks at the Cathay cineplex on Friday night. And boy, was it worth it! 2 great movies in its own right. It’s been a while since the westerners gave us something worthy, and not stupid shitty movies like Nacho Libre or Thank You For Smoking. Both of THESE flicks were so good that I’m compelled to do a quick review on them because if you give it them a miss, then please go hang yourselves.Â
No spoilers as usual.
The Prestige
What happens when friendship becomes a rivalry? 2 magicians outfox each other in this original screenplay. It drives them to the brink of being killers. And I was rooting for “Batman” to put one over “Wolverine”.
Compulsion, deception and jealousy. An exceptional cast that includes Michael Caine, the oh-so delectable Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie. The main magic trick though, was too far-fetched, which was a letdown. The verdict? A goodish 8/10.
The Departed
Infernal Affairs must’ve been a kickass movie, cause this one oozed class. A great ensemble, with top-notch acting. Regrettably the vulgar words hollered every other minute, was doltishly censored by the censorship board who I’m sure comprised of not the brightest of people. Twist after twist. It’s nothing that stupid actors like The Rock could ever dream of doing (by the way, if you like wrestling, go get a freaking life you gullible morons!). This story revolves around 2 moles at both sides of the law. Massacre, vehemence, BRILLIANT! We have to credit the Infernal Affairs team, though I think Martin Scorsese polishes it further. What a legendary director! The verdict, a magnificent 9/10. MY MOVIE OF 2006!

ahh crap. u watched the prestige already. was scarlett johansson’s actin bad again..
haha plannned to do a review on the departed. awesome with superb cast. haha. de arsenal match just now sux
Alex Her acting’s pretty much the same though she’s getting hotter by the minute. THE DEPARTED was simply superb! Definitely OSCAR material.
As for the Arsenal game, well, it’s not that bad of a result, we still have a long way to go.
Yeah man..
Departed really rocks… initially.. i am not putting high hope for it.. but it’s definitely the movie for 2006..
Dude, you have datelines for your next entries!
The Departed – Movie of the yr. It contains suspense, drama, and at the same time retains a strong comedic overtone. Great acting all around from a stellar cast. Scorsese has made an unforgettable film in The Departed that will be remembered for generations. Lets hope that the Academy wont snub him again next yr. 9/10
P/S: Just watched it again on DVD… yup… the clear copy is already out… Enjoyed it even more as alot of hillarious lines and scenes are choped off by the censordship board.
Robert I think this is a movie one can put high hopes and yet be astounded at the end. Just wonder if Infernal Affairs was anything like it.
sewjin Errrr…yes…
William I honestly think that this is Scorsese’s best flick, and a great cast like that, it’ll be difficult for the Oscars to give a cold shoulder. Thanks for dropping by with your droppings…
i enjoyed prestige more than departed, mainly becoz most of the scenes were expected in departed. It’s like watching a complete version of infernal affairs.
cely That’s a natural response I guess. The Prestige would’ve been better if not for that implausible trick.
I’ve always been wary of hollywood’s bastardisation of great hkg movies. Internal Affairs 1 (Tony Leung, Andy Lau) was a masterpiece. Try to watch it lah.. with subtitles
INFERNAL AFFAIRS… geez must get my eyes poked out, examined and poked in x100
Seriously when i saw the trailer for the Departed it was a bit tooooooo similar to Infernal Affairs. Then i saw the making of the Departed and the movie is loosely based on the HK movie. Matt Damon or Leo i think said that the two movie is distinctly different because of the setting…but..hah, it’s the plot that signifies the movie, so who cares about the setting man! I really don’t think it’s a good idea to do a remake of the Infernal Affairs…that one was too good…If you know the actors in it, you’ll know that those are really good actors that really made the movie really good. You’ve gotta see it
suanie I shall check with my colleagues whether any of ‘em has a copy. But this flick ain’t no bastardization that’s for sure, cause even Andy Lau rated it 8/10!
tihtahpah Will do. But, do go watch it before you make any conclusions. Trust me, it’s superb. And welcome back!
Infernal Affairs captivated me more. Somehow, the characters in Infernal Affairs had a lot more depth in them.
Dan, what are you waiting for? Go watch Infernal Affairs!!!
Jemima I read up about Infernal Affairs. Apparently THE DEPARTED combined all 3 parts of Infernal Affairs into one. Hopefully somebody has the DVD.
You should have watch Infernal Affairs, just the first movie, don’t watch the whole trilogy. For me, that’s the best Hong Kong movie ever. I haven’t watch The Departed yet but somehow I feel that Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon are not suitable to play the characters. They should have look for someone older because in the Infernal Affairs, both Andy Lau and Tony Leung are in their 40s and they are the best Hong Kong actors at the moment.
So now can Hollywood remake the other Hong Kong flick “A Better Tomorrow”? Trench coats are a must.
Eric No one has the DVD. So hopefully I’m able to get my hands on it at the DVD store. *FINGERS CROSSED* Actually DiCaprio and Damon were awesome. The best actor however, was JACK NICHOLSON, hands down.
Wombat Is that a flasher flick? LOL
I watched it too… damn it’s really good! You should watch Infernal Affairs since the departed left a mark on u
I’m rooting it for Oscars!
Lex No one in my office has the DVD!
I will try at my fav DVD store at the PJ Digital Mall this week…*FINGERS CROSSED*
Ohh I haven’t watch The Departed. Thought of going last week. Let’s hope the movie is still showing in the cinema.
Che-Cheh No to worry, it’s only opening this Thursday. Last weekend was a sneak preview, so you’ll have plenty of time…
The Prestige is actually a sci-fi movie. If you treat it as such it won’t be far-fetched at all.
KY Dude, if I wanted a sci-fi movie, I would’ve watched STAR WARS (yuck!!) instead. This was NOT a sci-fi movie, just a far-fetched magic trick that spoilt the realness of the movie. It’s not MAGIC (supernatural powers), but “magic” (illusory feat). Can tell the difference or not?
Ehh..how can you not like Star Wars…cmon…i’m not into sci-fi but i’d watch Star Wars and LOTR. Nice wattttttttttt…… mystical and magical wat….at least its not Harry Potter shit.
tihtahpah I don’t like Star Wars. But I do love LOTR.
