The Prestige & The Departed

I did it again. A weekend double. Back to back flicks at the Cathay cineplex on Friday night. And boy, was it worth it! 2 great movies in its own right. It’s been a while since the westerners gave us something worthy, and not stupid shitty movies like Nacho Libre or Thank You For Smoking. Both of THESE flicks were so good that I’m compelled to do a quick review on them because if you give it them a miss, then please go hang yourselves.

No spoilers as usual.

The Prestige
What happens when friendship becomes a rivalry? 2 magicians outfox each other in this original screenplay. It drives them to the brink of being killers. And I was rooting for “Batman” to put one over “Wolverine”. :-) Compulsion, deception and jealousy. An exceptional cast that includes Michael Caine, the oh-so delectable Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie. The main magic trick though, was too far-fetched, which was a letdown. The verdict? A goodish 8/10.

The Departed
Infernal Affairs must’ve been a kickass movie, cause this one oozed class. A great ensemble, with top-notch acting. Regrettably the vulgar words hollered every other minute, was doltishly censored by the censorship board who I’m sure comprised of not the brightest of people. Twist after twist. It’s nothing that stupid actors like The Rock could ever dream of doing (by the way, if you like wrestling, go get a freaking life you gullible morons!). This story revolves around 2 moles at both sides of the law. Massacre, vehemence, BRILLIANT! We have to credit the Infernal Affairs team, though I think Martin Scorsese polishes it further. What a legendary director! The verdict, a magnificent 9/10. MY MOVIE OF 2006!
