TheStar Total Football Coverage Launch with Shebby Singh & Hannah Tan

It was impromptu. I received an SMS from Anand, who was once the head of the Arsenal Football Supporters Club Malaysia, on Tuesday telling me to put on my Arsenal jersey and head over to TheStar office on Thursday for a football blog launch.

Mel got her Arsenal jersey on time from NIKE and we both walked to The Star office from my workplace in the adjacent building (I work @ the CP Tower). Shortly after we arrived, we were interviewed about my expectations for Arsenal this season. I told the reporter that I’m expecting the same commitment since last season, a third place finish. I do not expect them to win any silverware, simply because the lack of depth that will haunt us at some stage.

The reporter then asked me why I supported Arsenal, I told her it was because of my abhorrence for Liverpool. Back in the late 80s, you’re either an Evertonian or a Liverpudlian. So I told myself that the next team that smashes the dominance of these 2 bozo clubs will have my support. Cue Arsenal, winning 2-0 at Anfield on the final day to beat Liverpool to the title. OLE! I also had a good 10 minute chat with Shebby Singh, who was really earthy and was a pleasant chap. We chat about Arsenal, and his belief that the Gunners will be a force to reckon with again in the future because of his huge admiration for Wenger and the Arsenal style of play. He spoke to Mel & I like a sports commentator, exactly what you see on TV. LOL. I’ve e-mailed the photos to him.

Then, Mel caught Hannah Tan’s attention, and she gave Mel that “Oh-hi-haven’t-seen-you-in-a-while” look. Hannah has met Mel before in Borneo Baruk last March 2008. We quickly snapped a photo with her, and then spoke to her personal assistant, whom I casually pitched the idea of SBG09, perhaps with Hannah’s appearance.

I had Sabah in mind when I spoke to Shebby too. Let’s see shall we? May 2009 is definitely a quiet month for football, and there’s no major football event next year. Perhaps a Sabahan Bloggers Kaamatan Gathering? Shall leave that to the organizers, as I’m officially “retiring”. :-)
