Christopher Reeve’s Wife Succumbs to Lung Cancer

I can’t possibly envisage what is going through young Will Reeve’s mind. He lost his dad Christopher Reeve in 2004, then his grandmom not long after that (ovarian cancer), and now, last Monday, his mom, Dana Reeve from lung cancer. Shockingly, her health deteriorated within 7 months after being diagnosed. I remember epoxying my hindquarters to watch Oprah’s Primetime, to catch how Dana and her son are holding the line without Christopher Reeve (Clark Kent/Superman).

“Will Reeve learned to handle tragedy at the age of 3, when his father’s paralyzing horseback-riding accident abruptly ended the boy’s magical life as the son of “Superman.” Rather than feel sorry for himself or complain about all the attention his mother was bestowing on his dad, he helped her care for him. ”

Before Dana passed away, she had made arrangements for Will to stay with his half-brother and half-sister (Christopher’s first marriage).

This poignant story has reminded me that yet again, the frangibility of life, and how we need to live every moment as if it’s going to be our last.

When hardship falls on us, do we not owe it to ourselves to seek the pleasures behind the pain?
