Lifehouse – Smoke & Mirrors (Album Review)
Lifehouse has scored a few big numbers in the past, with the lead singer’s unique vocals, the songs were even more memorable. I love songs like “You & Me”, “Blind”, “Come Back Down” and “Storm” – all classic tracks. Now these fellas return with a new album, and I must say that I’m slightly disappointed. What served them well in the adult contemporary genre, they chucked it out the door for a more commercial friendly album, and that’s subjective too.
Gallivanter’s Album Verdict: 6/10

To me I love the genre..
must say its pretty easy on the ears..digging ‘it is what it is’ in particular
just heard the rest…there are a few decent ones..’all in’ aint bad either
Alv808 – I do too, but this album I do not really rate. Lifehouse can do much better with a voice like that.
mat kolej – Yes, but does it have any staying power? If you listen to it a few times, it’ll become a chore. So far, the only thing that interest me is “It is What It Is”, but it’s not the greatest.
We seem to have the same take on the album… and like you, I am digging “It is What it Is” but not in an amazing way. You can check out my review here if you like:

I was scouring the web for some reviews about Lifehouse’s “Smoke and Mirrors” and stumbled upon your post. I am currently in the process of acquiring my own copy, and even though I have yet to find out for myself whether or not I will like this new release, I had a hunch that the general reaction would be somewhere along your personal ratings. Their first single “Halfway Gone” did not really have an effect on me. Like you said, it sounded too catered to the musical trends of the current alternative/rock scene. Then again, I have yet to hear the album for myself; by then, my opinions will have more clarity.
Off topic, I notice a lot of photos and references to Indonesia in some of your blog posts. I was born and raised in Indonesia, and I love the place. I thought I’d point out that cool commonality. =)
Great review! I’ll go read your other posts now. =)
im so disappointed by smoke and mirrors
and i hate to say it
beacause i love lifehouse
no name face changed my life.
Musically, the album is pretty good – the sound is polished and easy on the ears. Sadly, compared to their two previous albums (no name face in particular) the lyrics are absolutely abysymal.
Heres a comparison:
“If shame had a face I think it would kinda look like mine. If it had a home would it be my eyes?”
Sick Cycle Carousel
to
“every time i see your face my heart takes off on a high speed chase”
Falling In
Now I’m not saying that every song has to have an amazing set of words to go with it but their choices of lyrics have gone from ‘mature, reasonable man’ to something a 14 year old girl would write in her diary. Get a grip!
Overall, I wouldn’t bother buying it, it just sounds for me too much like it was written for and by a radio station producer. All that said, there’s a band full of talented musicians underneath all the polish. You just need a decent orbital sander to get to them!
