Proton Persona SE 1.6A Special Edition 2008 @ RM59,800

GPS & Auto Cruise? For a Proton? Holy Schmoly! I know that these technologies are “dated”, but for a daggy carmaker like Proton to do this, it’s either to gain 0.005% of the Malaysian car market or a desperate bid to play catchup.

Proton, admittedly, has improved design-wise and its standard with the introduction of Gen-2 (batch 2 onwards), the tough Savvy and Persona. I did liked the Persona (the purple one especially) when I first laid my eyes on it last year.

However, the euphoria quickly died down when I realized that there were hardly any difference with the Gen-2 that I’m driving now. This Gen-2 has served me well, contrary to Malaysian belief, it’s all about waiting.

When a model (any car!) is launched, don’t be a super duper kiasu wanker and book yourself one. Obviously, the first batches comes with flaws, and it’ll take them a couple of months at least to rectify them. It happens for all cars, the only difference is, Vios, City owners swallow their ego by not revealing the drama.

And because Malaysians had to put up with crap from Proton over the years, the damage is irreversible to many. I myself, used to bitch about Proton like there’s no tomorrow, when I owned a Fiat Brava. That car was the deal, though finding spare parts is like I’m playing the character of Indiana Jones.

When I decided to give Gen-2 a try (a year after its launch), after shortlisting it with a Ford Ranger, I was initially taken aback with its road handling and braking. The only irk was the steering radius – rubbish.

The new Persona, special edition, has got my mouth watering – GPS, Auto Cruise, Leather Seats, Dual Airbags, ABS. The red color (my favorite) is awesome. With a price tag of RM59,800, it looks like a steal.

My only concern is the GPS, will it work? Will it only display maps on how to get to Proton Service centres only? LOL. What’s your take on Proton, what can be done to revive its flagging business? Sell it?
