Proton Persona SE 1.6A Special Edition 2008 @ RM59,800

[ad]
GPS & Auto Cruise? For a Proton? Holy Schmoly! I know that these technologies are “dated”, but for a daggy carmaker like Proton to do this, it’s either to gain 0.005% of the Malaysian car market or a desperate bid to play catchup.
Proton, admittedly, has improved design-wise and its standard with the introduction of Gen-2 (batch 2 onwards), the tough Savvy and Persona. I did liked the Persona (the purple one especially) when I first laid my eyes on it last year.

However, the euphoria quickly died down when I realized that there were hardly any difference with the Gen-2 that I’m driving now. This Gen-2 has served me well, contrary to Malaysian belief, it’s all about waiting.
When a model (any car!) is launched, don’t be a super duper kiasu wanker and book yourself one. Obviously, the first batches comes with flaws, and it’ll take them a couple of months at least to rectify them. It happens for all cars, the only difference is, Vios, City owners swallow their ego by not revealing the drama.

And because Malaysians had to put up with crap from Proton over the years, the damage is irreversible to many. I myself, used to bitch about Proton like there’s no tomorrow, when I owned a Fiat Brava. That car was the deal, though finding spare parts is like I’m playing the character of Indiana Jones.
When I decided to give Gen-2 a try (a year after its launch), after shortlisting it with a Ford Ranger, I was initially taken aback with its road handling and braking. The only irk was the steering radius – rubbish.

The new Persona, special edition, has got my mouth watering – GPS, Auto Cruise, Leather Seats, Dual Airbags, ABS. The red color (my favorite) is awesome. With a price tag of RM59,800, it looks like a steal.
My only concern is the GPS, will it work? Will it only display maps on how to get to Proton Service centres only? LOL. What’s your take on Proton, what can be done to revive its flagging business? Sell it?

ada gps system, but does it work here, in KK? @_@
oh the buntut macam gen-2 ni
I thought u were kidding me when u told me drive a gen2 too.
My gen2 has been serving me good for 3 yrs now, commuting me up and down KK-Keningau road. So far, i have no real big problem with it. To quote the sales rep who sold me the gen2, “as long as the car is taken good care of i.e. regular servicing etc it should gives at least the basic satisfaction of driving a car.”
Hahaha!! don’t be so mean bah! I’m sure the GPS will work just fine!! *LOL*
Persona actually is a nice car, the design is great… but I still prefer Gen2 design if for local car… lolz
massy – I don’t see why the GPS wouldn’t work in KK. Yeah, it’s Gen-2′s bum, but extended.
chegu carol – No bah, I wasn’t lying, I own a Gen-2, since Apr 2005 and have no problems whatsoever, except one breakdown few months ago, a fused starter (wear and tear), that’s about it.
kaDusMama – Hehehehehe! Can’t help it bah, made in Malaysia!
iCalvyn – High five! I know what you mean, as I have a thing for hatchback-looking cars, as I feel sedan’s for old men.
it’s got some additional aesthetic and electronic features, but it’s the body and functional parts that i’m concerned with. Mostly are Iswara/Gen2/Neo parts further cost down compromising material composition, durability and reliability…very worrying lahhh…unless they got some accident test to say Persona can ‘tahan’ better than Gen2….
I test drove it, not bad handling, I just hated the door handle color – which was different from the body.
hello daniel!
first time saya komen2 di sini.. hehe anyways the Persona SE looks fantastic ohhh… i like both gentut and persona.. hehe so cool and trendy bah..
Welcome! Iya I too like the Gentut and Personut
luckily they’ve done away the sabre-hilt-like brake lever.
Well, that didn’t bug me whatsoever.
looks pretty sleek.
True, hence my love for it
my father already bought it and i love the car…..wat a wonderful prestige…
riz – Yeah, but the thing I hated about it is the silly door handle, different color and closing the door is not as smooth as the Myvi & Saga.
I had bought persona car in April. Although it’s new car, but it still had problems. This problems also make me so worry. Persona SE’s looking is quite good, but i don’t know how about it. Is it also has problems, although it’s new car. I had done my services for my car, but it still had problems. I think the services of Proton should upgrade, if not we will not very belived in quality of proton.
Johnny – Hmmm, maybe it’s always best to avoid first batches.
So, we must be serious in choosing our cars. I also felt very worry of my car in future time.
Yeah, well, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for ya!
