The Five-Second Rule About Dropped Food – Myth or Reality?
Where the hell did this rule come from? Is there such a thing as a five second rule? What happens if it’s 6 seconds, the food becomes inedible? WTF.
Most food that you drop is still perfectly edible if it was in your eyesight the whole time. Obviously dropping it on the floor vs table are 2 different things.
I’m just curious about this “rule”, and there’s a lot of people who say that, a case of “monkey-hear-monkey-say”? Have you heard of this rule before, and if you have, how many seconds were you quoted?

i think it’s 3 second or more depending on where the food landed. ;-D but it’s really is just a laugh ba…sayang mo buang tu makanan so ada excuse la. hehe
haha…common sense will tell us that we will never pick food that accidentally dropped on a piece of poop, right? no matter how brief seconds they felt on it.
if the food fell on a so called clean table, i’ll pick it up straight away la. if lambat2 pick, org lain nampak..malu la hahaha
i go with carol. quickly pick it up before someone else sees it. but please refrain from doing it in front of a hot date HAHAHA
When I was a kid, if I dropped food on the floor or outside (not near any mud or poop, etc), I will just brush off the visible dirt and eat it. But I guess that’s how I built up my immunity. LOL
Depends on where the food landed and how soon you pick it up, I mean it got something to do with the way you think too. Like do you want to pick it up or not XD
Never Ever pick up any dropped food and eat them.. no matter where it landed.. Even at home where you know how clean it is.. I’ve been told about this rule before by “orang tua2″ that you still can pick it within 7 seconds.. I’d pick it but to put together with the rest of the sampah makanan, not to be eaten…
nah. LOL. i think its BS. i will still pick n eat even if it is a min later as long as it lands on a clean place. lol. sometimes i find popcorn sticking to my baju AFTER movie, i still pop tht corn into my mouth anyway
watch mythbusters .. there’s a episode about it.. its actually false..
For me, i didnt pick up food once it’s fell.. I am afraid with germs..hehe!
yeah, i heard of it! and i go with carol’s explanation. but we believed in something extra, blow the dust of the food and it’ll be just fine! whether you can see the dust or not, or whether you blew it clean or it still sticks there! i called that ‘mom’s myth’.
claire – Indeed, although over time, I know some people who take this SERIOUSLY. Haha!
chegu carol – Aiyo, of course la if it drops on the poop you don’t take. Could it be more obvious?
LaViaP – Haha! I usually don’t pick the food up if it falls, it’s a good test to see how your date or the person you’re with respond.
PinknPurpleLizard – Nice one. Haha! Good point on immunity.
Massy – Probably, but after the monkey-see-monkey-do effect, you’ll end up with the habit yourself. I usually leave it as it is, UNLESS if it’s my FAVORITE dish – sambal ikan bilis, then I must save every single anchovy if possible.
Mimi – 7 seconds? Really? But I like your habit of not picking up the food.
xin – Yeah, I think for popcorn, even I’m guilty of that when watching movie.
sam – What’s false, the food does get contaminated or it doesn’t?
stella – Yeah, good habit.
Amanda – Probably, although I don’t make a habit of it.
I usually imagined that when the food dropped, all the germs will ran away.. just like in movies where when a piece of building fell, all humans on the ground ran like crazy..so it might took a few minutes for the germs to calm down and ran back to get the food.. :p
Agree with XIN. Indeed we have the same habit about that popcorn thing.. Sayang ba tu makanan.. hehehe
BiniKedek – Don’t think it works that way…
Steward – Haha, surely depends on the surface it fell on…
