I Once Acted in a Church Play
1992. The year I sat for my SRP examination. And I was still active in church. From altar boy to reader to choir. I’ve done them all. This, was the pinnacle. I auditioned for the play and got the role of “Henry”, a bratty child of a loving father, who loves to spoil him and treats his step-daughter (Henry’s step-sister), rather poorly.
It ends with me having been hurt in an accident so damaging, that it altered the thinking of the dad, who then realize how fragile life is, and begged for forgiveness from his step-daughter.
I remember spending a lot of time, especially with the recording of the voice overs. We canvassed a number of churches, including Our Lady of Lourdes, St Anne’s Klang, Holy Redeemer Berkeley, St Francis Xavier, Assumption PJ, St Ignatius, Monfort Boys Home Shah Alam, St John’s KL, to name a few.
How many of you have acted in a play before?
P/S: I’m never a pious person (unlike those born-again Christian idiots converts who shove religious propaganda down your throat) and no longer am practising the religion. For reasons unknown.

almost every year man, its one of those things we born-again Christian idiots do
I’ve participated in Malay and Chinese dance in school…wuahahaha I don’t believe it myself.
Fuyoh…terror nyerrrr. Altar boys are so cute but my cilaka kids refused to be bribe to be one. LOL, I am always wary of not getting suck into the system and prefer to play on my own rules. Hahaha. I am pious, I hope. Just a bit rebellious.
altar servers??? i was one too. he he, i still am. a play actor? have… with the church where our priest have his birthday. the diocese have 18 priests, having a huge party whenever one have a birthday
That’s really something out of the blue.
nicktay LOL. As long as it does not involve forcefully dragging people from other religions to join.
Che-Cheh Oops, I forgot about that. I did a couple of comedies too, “Mind Your Language”, in Standard 6 as Mr Brown and Form 2 (as scriptwriter/director/Juan Cervantes).
lilian Shocking huh? That’s why I read your blog, curious to know how a pious yet rebellious Catholic lives her life.
clement Cool. As long as you keep your distance from priests whenever you don that altar boy costume. Hahahaha!
Jason Yup, I thought about this over the weekend after speaking to my nephew in Singapore about plays.
Eh! I played in so many plays before, well in my high school obviously. Since I was from all girls school, I always ended up being a boy, no matter how long my hair was. It was fun! I like acting.
I did script writing and even directing before! Sometimes I wonder why I ended up doing what I do. Sigh. Well… at least it keeps me off the street
Me! I’ve been involved in so many school productions, I can’t even count them. Being on stage is one of the best feelings ever
Faiez Then I know who to call if my Amazing Race Asia video doesn’t make the cut. Free next year?
Sha I agree. The feeling, the rush of emotions, is uplifting.
sweet man.. i imagine being on stage is one of the best feelings on the planet.. unfortunately i’ve got stage fright.. =(
i do however remember that one time in kindergarden, when i was forced to be the bandmaster… nearly tripped of my stand and had the crowd in an uproar..
come to think of it.. i think thats the reason i have stage fright.. idiots..
on another note, i’ve come to realise that i am not a very religious person, but i make up for it with my spirituality.. if that makes sense..
-cheers-
oh Great Gallivanter… you may be one of us
it does not mean that you went church and you aint evil
i’m sure that experience has gained you knowledge to the weakness of religions, LOL remember even the devil reads the bible
….just kidding no offense meant to those who believe in religion…
i never act b4! hehehe
vickna The first 5 minutes is important as your stomach will be filled with butterflies. I understand what you mean on the spirituality part, I practice spirituality too, between 5 to 40%.
Lucifer That I don’t deny oh horny one.
Religion has its loopholes.
huei It’s not easy, but it’s uplifting.
i’ve been in church plays, school plays, college plays,…and even other things related to plays like stage manager, Prop builder, Backdrop painter, lighting supervisor.
but i still get stage fight when i am infront of people…
i think i have been in 6 plays… and i thoroughly enjoyed all of them… particularly those when i was still in school… glamour mah hahahahahaha!
remember my first play was called ‘the big picture’. too bad most of us dont see that anymore…
does directing count? hmm…
maybe less than 5. the funniest was sitting in the vestry telling ghost stories while waiting for my scene. Almost missed my scene and I was suppose to be Angel Gabriel…
^__^
Mo Not bad, an all rounder. I have only directed and acted, nothing else.
The only time I have a guitar in my hands is during caroling.
Zewt Yes yes, it comes with all the glamour, especially if your direction receive a standing ovation!
coffeerox Why coffee, Angel Gabriel?
hmm… now that I had time to get off my brain, i have also done wardrobe, stage managing & promotions. The funniest play was when one of the props was toilets bowls. Yes… TOILET BOWLS. And the porcelain ones! Moving them was a killer! Then the cast, before getting on stage will all take a shot (or two) of whisky… The owner of the whisky pinned me against the corner of the already crammed changing room and threathened to burp in my face if I drank the whole bottle while they were on stage! And this guy was massive – but a darling!
Anyway… Angel Gab : I suppose it was because once upon a time I actually did have an angelic face. Then I grew up!
MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA ^__^
coffeerox Porcelain toilet bowls as props? Talk about taking the piss. Hahahahaha! Actually, having a shot of alcohol helps to ease nervousness.
Come show me your pic, let me be the judge whether you grew up or still have that angelic face…
