Miss Fourth of July (Codenamed SYCL)

Can you see me? I’m the dweeb with the Bobby Brown hairdo! (Form 1, 1990)

I ascended to Sunway Pyramid last night, to catch up with a yesteryear classmate from secondary school, the school with the longest name……ready?……Sekolah Menengah Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. Hahaha! Told ya! When we first commenced Form 1, we were penalized 10 cents whenever we incorrectly sang the words to the school song. Can you ever envisage singing the name of this school, in a single breath? I can see where they got the dinero to construct an indoor school hall. Hahaha!

Anyway, I was the class monitor during Form 1 and she was the assistant monitor. It was majuscule. I used to be the most slothful class monitor in school, and I recollect my English teacher, (I think it was Ms Nancy), calling me an embarrassment to class monitors – which I thought was very sweet of her. LOL!

Our friendship blossomed and it didn’t take long for us to become great friends, plausibly my closest friend in high school. We got along very well, and also sometimes nettle the living daylight out of each other. She went on to become a school prefect while I remained a slothful bindlestiff. Never hit the books for SPM, got SAP with 3 A1s – English, Maths and BM. The rest were P7s & P8s (Science stream). I bucked up bigtime when I went to college, scoring A’s whenever possible – why? Cause it costs a lot more moolah than school!

Seeing her after all these years revived a billow of wonderful memories. She possesses the most magnetic smile I’ve ever witnessed in my 28 years of existence. She hasn’t aged a day since I last saw her and looking as picturesque as ever. :-)

To SYCL, thank you for being my friend all through the years. Though time has vagabonded us, you’ll always remain a true friend.

“So we wave goodbye to Miss Fourth of July
The queen of the roses has left us with nothing but thorns
Don’t say we never tried, Miss Fourth of July
The stars that we reached for left us with nothing but dawn” – Bon Jovi’s Miss Fourth of July (Demo)
