My Past was Relived Through My Friend Last Weekend!

This is a 1997 (or was it 1998) photo of me, Vicky & Tamana. We performed in front of 1000 people – Tamana played the sitar, Vicky played the tabla while I played the guitar and sang a song that was “chosen” by the organizing lecturers – Elton John’s Candle in the Wind.

Daniel, Vicky & Tamana - Candle in the Wind 1997/98

It starts off with Tamana’s sitar solo for approximately 45 seconds and before she stopped Vicky proceed to show off his tabla skills for another 45 seconds. Shortly before he ended, I strummed the beginning of the song.

“Goodbye England’s Rose” started off a night that ended with me getting a flower from an admirer who to this date I’ve no idea who it was. Until this day, I hated the ending, how the lecturer made me put my guitar down and walk towards a lighted candle on the floor, kneel, pick it up and to blow it out. Cheesy!

Fast forward 12 years later, only one person remained through to his music roots. Seeing AkashA’s show made me wished it was me instead but it was a no-brainer to set aside my musical dreams because of the odds stacked against a local musician, especially non-Malays where almost always you spend the remainder of your lives in some shanty pub.

But, Vicky made it.

Last Sunday, I sat and proudly watched my friend, who over the years, mastered his art of playing the tabla to perfection, entertaining a crowd of over 500 with his band AkashA. They have SO MUCH potential and there were a handful of tunes that I really enjoyed listening, and it’s very RARE that I like intrumental songs. That is a testament to this band’s ability.

I checked out the album, and the recording does not do justice as they sound MUCH BETTER performing LIVE. If you’re planning to attend the Rainforest Music Festival in 2009, watch out for my friend’s band AkashA, you’d be surely entertained – value for money!
