How Michael Jackson Started My Love for Music
My first taste of music as a 7 year old was THAT renowned Grammy Awards cassette – that had “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, “Uptown Girl”, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, “Let’s Dance”, “Every Breath You Take”, “Karma Chameleon”, “Flashdance – What a Feeling” on the album.
That’s where my love for MJ commenced - “Beat It” & “Billie Jean”.

I recalled how my late dad had the “Thriller” cassette, and how I perpetually listened to the whole album and for some reason, my favorite song off the album back then was “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”.
I remembered attending some event for children in 1987 (can’t recall what event), but I definitely recall dancing to a Michael Jackson song all on my own in front of everyone. It was a spontaneous moment. I clearly can recollect a lady (I was 10), asking me to marry her jokingly – and then keep saying she wished I was older? LOL!

I remembered how I hotfooted to a friend’s house (he had the largest TV set in the neighbourhood) to join a big group of children and adults and catch the debut of MJ’s music video – “Bad”.
I think there were 2 memories in 1988, once during my primary school prefects’ gathering, I sang “Man in the Mirror” solo, and another, dancing in a group of 4 in front of strangers at Central Market KL to “The Way You Make Me Feel”.

I remembered how in 1991, when I first heard “Black or White” on the radio, and pestered my mom to get me the “Dangerous” cassette as an early Christmas gift – I even accompanied her to Lot 10 Salem Power station to buy it!

Fast forward to 1997, I went to Langkawi with my then girlfriend, and another couple. We were having boozing and chilling, typical Langkawi fun, and at night we drove to Sheraton Langkawi to a pub there. When “Blood on the Dancefloor” unexpectedly came on, I took the stage again and danced like there’s no tomorrow, when the tune ended, everyone in the pub clapped. Either they were enjoyed it or happy that it was over. LOL.
Every single memory there continued my love for music, with Michael Jackson being the catalyst.

RIP MJ. The LAST LEGEND on Earth. No other musician will ever come close to you, even the ones in the past. You did what Elvis and the Beatles didn’t really achieve, uniting the world, different races, religion and ages. We were blessed by your presence.

Jacko is truly a big loss to the world.
WOw! YOu used to dance in the public? Ha
Yeah! I have to admit to one can replace him. And thus far…he does look like the only legend in his generation! RIP legend!
Oh man, not being able to post comments on your other post, so i have to make it for this one cause it really bring back memories of the good old days with Micky…
The way he dress in every single MV… oh man how cool is that… Mom like him a lot but she never bought any of her cassette, but if there’s something about him on the tv, you just have to pray its the slot after dinner cause if its before dinner, then you need to cook for your own self XD
I saw the story about Jackson 5 and if not mistakenly there is a movie about him too. I remember the most is the part where he burnt himself on stage in one concert. Its like watching him in concert, so cool man.
His one song that I remember the most cause it was always on the radio back then is ‘you are not alone’. its his comeback after a few years stayed in wonderland. im gonna miss michael… he explains about the moonwalk but i still cant freakin do it =.=
I still feel sad everytime I hear his song plays… You’re right. Memang no one else can take his place. He was really one in a million.
My brother had a video cassette of all of MJ’s videoclips , you know with that psychedelic cover where only his eyes can be seen as if he’s wearing a mask and there are like, weird stuff surrounding it (elephants, monkeys etc)? yeah, we use to watch that video over and over again and that Thriller video clip actually scared me…i always had to close my eyes. I was probably 7 at that time. The last time I was at Redbox with a friend bout a few months ago, we watched all of MJ’s videoclip while having our lunch instead of karaokeing. It was like being 7 again.
Can I call you Michael Jackson Jr?LOL
The first time I heard of MJ was when the ‘Beat It’ music video played on TV while I was watching some X’mas movie. Think I was 7 at the time and I thought he was the coolest thing I’ve seen on TV.
Every one of MJ’s songs remind me of a particular time in my life. My mum has the Thriller vinyl record and I remember playing it on this old stereo my dad used to have…sigh..
Thank you for these tributes to the great MJ. I am so sad. I’ve never mourned the demise of a star this much ever before. MJ was a miracle, he was a treasure.. and the many who hurled nasty accusations at him have erred greatly. We get uncomfortable when someone just doesn’t fit into the moulds or categories that exist, and because MJ was just too very unique a character, it was convenient to paint an ugly picture of him, and exploit their access to him. How dare they do this? He gave the world much much more than it ever gave him. He had so much more to give. But we didn’t deserve him I guess, and so he’s gone. No more Michael Jackson. There never was a phenomenon like him and one should rightly doubt if there ever will be. I feel sorry for those who’ll never know MJ as what he truly was. MJ could truly have died of a broken heart.. RIP Michael Jackson. May he finally rest and find the peace and happiness he’s been longing for.
Wow, perhaps one day you can show us a video of your MJ’s dance move.
There’s no one like him. As of today, I still can’t believe he’s gone.
The first song I heard off Thriller was Beat It in 1984, someone played it at school – I was blown away.
cicak – An understatement.
tekkaus – Yeah I did, I knew the dance moves from his Thriller, Beat It, The Way You Make Me Feel, minus the actual MJ moves. He is the LAST legend on earth that’s for sure, and arguably the GREATEST in music.
Daniel Chiam – Yeah, the moonwalk isn’t easy.
Rozella – Nope, one in 7 billion.
Amanda – I love the Thriller music video, especially the dance.
carmel – LOL. No, there can only be 3, and that’s MJ’s sons and daughter.
sriyany – Memories. Sweet.
Paulin Aro – Spot on.
Che-Cheh – Don’t think I remember it, and I was thinner back then.
ben – Awesome track. He has a number of home runs in his career, how many artists achieved what he has? NONE.
yeah,you’re right..LOL..
carmel –
