Whatever Happened to the Roti Man?
[ad]
Well, obviously, this is not a gender-related issue, let’s take a break from that for now.
It used to be something we look forward to during the late evenings. That sound of the horn, that stops us from whatever we do, like a call of the herd. If we’re watching cartoon, or playing games with friends, none matters when the roti man comes a calling.
Junk food like chickadees, cheezels, twisties were available, with my favorite, the coconut bun. Not the one with the brown sugar, the original. Yes, I think you already know how much I love coconut (see kuih muih entry). I can survive ala Tom Hanks’ Castaway, I don’t need a “Wilson”, all I need is coconut.
What was your favorite junk food / bun whenever the roti man whooshes by?

Twisties!
Surprisingly… My favourites are also chickadees, cheezels, twisties AND the coconut bun!! I swear!
chickadees ! i think when i was younger we din really get the twisties..burger rings and the coloured bubblegum stuff
super ring and the coconut bun – hands down!!!
But in ipoh, he stil comes… though we also get a kuih guy whose coconut buns are so much nicer… er… did that sound rude?
I see a similar looking roti man in sect 14 sometimes…
^__^
chickadees!! and also kaya bun..
oooh i still get the roti man – n all the other old stuff ;p coz i live in a small town ;p near kl so i still get the perks ;p
oooh my fav used to be chickadees cheezels ;p
oh yeah, always when the clock ticks to 5pm, i will hear the horny sound from the roti man. hehe
twisties original chicken and spicy flavour!
super ring..best part is licking the orange color fake cheese off your fingers after) and there’s the cone shaped pastry thing that looks like a hermit crab shell with sweet cream in it.. and this yucky corn snack (angin also sudah masuk) which comes with a silly toy.. i’m a so called working ‘adult way past my twenties but still indulge in all of the above…its fun to act like a kid…
The coconut bun – definitely the original one, not the one with brown sugar. Brown sugar and coconut specifically for delights from the box of the putumayam / iddiappam man (who was bloody inconsistent in my neighbourhood (dei, mana pigi!!!)
Also loved those sugar glazed buns, with red and green cherries and raisins. Made my teeth prtest. Sweeeeeeeettttt!
have you seen the super ring tvc?
I just wished they have invested all that money for ad slots and tvc into increasing content for each packet…
^__^
CHICKADEEZ!!!!!
chickadees too!
Haha, make me thinking back old time. I like a lot of junk food when I was young, now no more, coz want to keep fit.
I like cheezels, twisties too!yummy!and also icecream potong..
The Roti Bai
when i was much younger he used to come in a bicycle.. then he graduated to a motorbike… and now-a-days its taken over by this Eden Bakery which comes around in a van; once in a blue moon, singing this “Eden Bread” jingle to the tune of jingle bells!!!
Chickadees the ORIGINAL coconut bun of course!!! Have you tasted chickadees lately? It has a new packaging and all but some how, I think it has lost its original taste
Chickadees and Oh YA – Cheezels!! I also remember Kum Kum and collecting little toys that came with each packet.
xin OLE, apa flavor?
pelf You love coconut bun too? You single?
tihtahpah I remember burger rings, dodgy, I just wanted the freebies man. LOL.
coffeerox Another coconut bun lover, OLE! I haven’t seen a roti man for a couple of years now, gotta move away from my useless neighborhood.
Mo Eeek, didn’t like kaya bun, though I did love the kaya that used to come in tins.
visithra They’ll be extinct soon, why don’t you take a photo of them, cause I can’t find a single one on the net. You’d be a millionaire in 5 years.
yipguseng Horny sound? I always suspected something was wrong with you…hehehehe!
susie_q Cheezels tend to turn your fingers orange, I remember that hermit the crab pastry and the yucky corn snack. We should organize a get-together to ambush the roti man. Hahahaha!
Keropok Amen! I love putumayam, can still find the sellers, but always at the wrong time. Oh yes, those sugar glazed buns, tried ‘em but the coconut bun was too delectable to ignore.
coffeerox Err, no. What’s Super Ring? Isn’t it Burger Ring?
marsha Yeah baby! *lame attempt at impersonating Austin Powers*
Che-Cheh *Tries again* Yeah baby!
maria Yeah, I blogged about icecream potong not too long ago.
Janice Eden bakery? LOL. Yeah, I tasted the new Chickadees, and it’s DEFINITELY not the same. I’m guessing the original one had some druggy content, cause all kids I knew back then, LOVED it.
Giddy Tiger Kum Kum? LOL, I can’t recall that one, though I recall the dodgy-tasting DING DANG.
roti kaya. not the prepack ones but the one the rotiman prepare on the spot for you. fully loaded kaya. yum!
and chickadees. hehe.
Larawannabe Oh, yes, the famous ROTI BENGALI.

lexhooi Go snap some photos before Roti Man becomes extinct.
I like roti krim! And also that swiss roll kinda cake. Dia color2 like rainbow like that! I still think that benggali roti, (that’s what we call the roti man
) is still around at my kg. Some already upgraded to motorbike, but I still saw one with the bicycle, overloaded with buns!
ahhh… those were the good ol days. Kids now days only know twiggies, gardenia, high 5!
Faiez Yes, I remember that, but rainbow coloring? Nothing like Bengali bread – still the BEST bread.
Original pringles and the spicy jack n jill chips ! yeah !!!
Lee Yee Wow, those are considered “branded” junk food leh. Didn’t you have a normal childhood? Hehehehe! Kidding!
