Yahoo Closes Geocities – The Beginning of the End

It was the in thing in the late 90s – I used to have my own homepage hosted on Geocities. I can’t remember what was the website URL that I used, it could’ve been Sunset Strip.
I remembered how I created my homepage, black background, with white fonts, and designed an animation that said, “Daniel by day, Devil by night”, with a photo of my face morphing into a skull. Don’t ask! LOL. I even put up my lyrics of some of my compositions too.
Fast forward more than 10 years later, Yahoo, who acquired Geocities, have decided to pull the plug on this service. I doubt that many of you out there heard of Geocities, but if you’re one of those who experienced the birth of internet in Malaysia like me, you will certainly be aware of Geocities.
Goodbye Geocities – it was fun while it lasted.
What? They closed Geocities?
I had lots of Geocities webpages (was hosted on Silicon Valley! LOL) and yes, i too had that ‘funny old-skool design’ on them. And almost all of my pages was uncompleted due to laziness and lame Internet connection.
I hate the hourly counted bandwidth and the annoying Yahoo ad. Alamak! I hope there’s still time for me to download all my old stuff.

I heard about Geocities, but never bothered to have a homepage there!
They are closing it? I did had a homepage there, can’t remember my URL..What I hate was the little space they provided for us to make a homepage, don’t remember, it was like 5MB (was it?) or something..
I think blog kills Geocities.
I mean blog ‘killed’ Geocities
I had one homepage there. Couldn’t remember the name now. I think it’s about time they close it coz nobody uses Geocities anymore.
I won’t miss Geocities. Almost all the sites I’ve ever been to that were hosted on Geocities were highly annoying.

I used to host my first ever site at Geocities, and yes… can’t remember oredi my url That was the golden years of websites creation i think… 10 years… yah… it’s been a while…

Ah… Nostalgia. I used to use Geocities in the 90s.
Then… I switched to something else coz I have no sense of loyalty. LOL
It is such a pity…but I think geocities is not relevant anymore. I used to have 1 too.
my first website was there too… the “old schoolers” webmaster should know and appreciate them. for the new generations, it’s all about facebook and bloggers.com now.
cicak – Yeah, I remember the old school design, and don’t remember the hourly counted bandwidth nor the Yahoo Ad – as I left Geocities 2 years after its launch. You do have time to download.
foongpc – Those days, it was the IN THING and there was not much of competition.
guong – I can’t remember my URL there either. I’ve no idea whether it still exist. Yeah, there was a limit to the total size. I think a mixture of blogs and social platforms destroyed Geocities.
Che-Cheh – Yeah, nobody uses them. A death of an internet pioneer.
Marf – I don’t know about these days as I used Geocities for 2 years, 1996 to 1998.

msians – I appreciated the use and remembered spending a lot of time designing my homepage. It was fun back then. I wonder if 10 years from now, blogspot ceases to exist.
yup…dat was one of the earliest ‘portal’ and if im not wrong, I think I also sign up a webpage too.
I’m from that same era and I had my own homepage too. I can’t remember the address though. It’s sad to see it go …
Why don’t Yahoo be a little bit creative and be more like Google. LOL.
I still use Yahoo Mail eventhough I find Gmail is not bad at all.
FlickR is a Yahoo thing. Blogspot is a Google thing. And many more
I guess they’re competing well. But then Yahoo 360 is going nowhere. It sucks.
I used to have my own geocities website.. but its thousands of ads on it pushed me away.
